Sr. Manager Manufacturing - AR5 Solution Prep

What you will do

Let’s do this. Let’s change the world. In this vital role you will lead the Solution Preparation organization within AR5 — a critical and highly integrated part of Amgen’s large-scale biomanufacturing network. This team plays an essential role in the success of the plant by supplying high-quality media to Cell Culture and buffers to Purification, enabling the reliable and consistent manufacture of Amgen’s biologic medicines.

The Senior Manager oversees a team of more than 50 staff working across four shifts, each led by a Front-Line Manager, ensuring safe, compliant, and efficient 24/7 operations.

As a member of the AR5 Manufacturing Leadership Team, this leader shapes operational performance, drives site-wide alignment, and plays a key role in transforming how we manufacture today to deliver on the processes of tomorrow.

Key Responsibilities

  • Safety and Quality Leadership

  • Champion Amgen’s core commitment to safety and product quality by fostering a culture of accountability and continuous improvement.

  • Ensure manufacturing execution consistently meets GMP, EHS, and regulatory expectations, with proactive risk identification and mitigation.

  • Strengthen and build upon an already strong safety and quality culture, reinforcing standards through daily leadership presence on the floor (Gemba).

  • Operational Leadership

  • Lead the Solution Preparation organization to achieve production goals across a 24/7 operation.

  • Provide oversight and direction to Front-Line Managers, ensuring alignment with AR5’s Floor Operating Principles and site objectives.

  • Coordinate cross-functional support to troubleshoot and resolve operational challenges, including participation in the AR5/AR30 on-call leadership rotation.

  • Strategic and Continuous Improvement

  • Influence site and network-level manufacturing strategy, driving operational excellence, digital literacy, and adoption of modern manufacturing processes.

  • Lead initiatives to reduce deviations, enhance process reliability, and improve right-first-time performance.

  • Champion digital and data-driven solutions to improve decision-making, operational transparency, and real-time performance oversight.

  • Innovation and Process Enhancement

  • Drive process transformation efforts that enhance efficiency and eliminate non-value-added activities.

  • Lead operational readiness for process improvements, including innovative changeover, scheduling, and resource deployment solutions.

  • Support I-530 operations, capacity utilization, and scalability across both AR5 and AR30.

  • Talent Development

  • Mentor and grow Front-Line Managers and staff, fostering engagement, belonging, and a mentality of continuous learning.

  • Reinforce Amgen’s Agile Workforce model and OnePlant philosophy by enabling cross-training and dynamic resource allocation across AR5 and AR30.

  • Build an impactful, adaptable organization prepared to meet the evolving demands of a future-ready manufacturing network.

  • Capacity Planning and Network Collaboration

  • Lead resource planning and capacity modeling to align with Amgen’s long-range manufacturing plan.

  • Partner closely with Quality, Process Development, Engineering, Safety, Supply Chain, and Technology to ensure integrated, reliable operations.

  • Collaborate across the global Amgen manufacturing network to share best practices, align strategic priorities, and elevate network performance.

Basic Qualifications:

  • High School diploma/GED and 12 years of Manufacturing & Operations experience OR

  • Associate's degree and 10 years of Manufacturing & Operations experience OR

  • Bachelor’s degree and 8 years of Manufacturing & Operations experience OR

  • Master’s degree and 6 years of Manufacturing & Operations experience OR

  • Doctorate degree and 2 years of Manufacturing & Operations experience Or

  • In addition to meeting at least one of the above requirements, you must have a minimum of 2 years experience directly managing people and/or leadership experience leading teams, projects, programs, or directing the allocation or resources. Your managerial experience may run concurrently with the required technical experience referenced above.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Passion for manufacturing, including people and process
  • Demonstrated managerial experience in a regulated manufacturing environment
  • Familiarity with GMP regulations as they apply to biotechnology manufacturing
  • Skilled in change management, team building, and fostering innovation
  • Cross-functional work experience in a manufacturing-facing function such as Process Development, Quality, Supply Chain or Engineering
  • Excellent communication skills, drive, sense of urgency, and problem-solving abilities
  • Demonstrated experience in applying Operational Excellence and Lean Manufacturing
  • Demonstrated ability to forge and maintain strong relationships with other functional areas
  • User-level fluency with digital tools for daily management, data analysis and visualization, and appli
