About this role

Sr. Accountant

We are looking for an experienced Sr. Accountant to support nonprofit financial operations in Santa Rosa, California. This role is ideal for someone with strong expertise in grant administration, federal award compliance, and core accounting processes who can keep reporting accurate, organized, and audit-ready. The position also calls for sound judgment in risk management, collaboration across teams, and the ability to improve workflows while supporting a dynamic, mission-driven environment.

Responsibilities

  • Direct day-to-day general ledger activity, oversee monthly close, and complete timely reconciliations for balance sheet accounts, bank accounts, and purchasing card activity.

  • Administer cash disbursement and collection processes by coordinating accounts payable, accounts receivable, expense card activity, and grant-related transactions.

  • Maintain complete and accurate financial records that support efficient audits, year-end reporting, and strong internal controls.

  • Review financial statements, monthly reporting packages, and banking activity for a large portfolio of fiscally sponsored or project-based programs.

  • Support annual audit preparation by assembling schedules, documentation, and other materials needed during fieldwork and year-end review.

  • Assist with tax and compliance reporting by preparing supporting schedules for annual filings, including Form 990 documentation.

  • Manage or contribute to accounting and cross-functional initiatives, including process automation and implementation of updated accounts payable workflows.

  • Prepare grant funding requests and required reports for government and other external funders while monitoring compliance expectations.

  • Help develop and maintain federal award administration procedures aligned with Uniform Guidance, including allocation support for restricted grant spending and payroll reporting.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or a related discipline; equivalent relevant experience may be considered.

  • At least 5 years of accounting experience, with strong preference for nonprofit, multi-entity, or fiscally supported environments.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of grant accounting, grant administration, and federal award compliance, including Uniform Grant Guidance.

  • Hands-on experience with general ledger management, journal entries, month-end and year-end close, reconciliations, and financial statement preparation.

  • Proficiency with QuickBooks and advanced Microsoft Excel skills; experience with AP/AR platforms, expense management tools, and Salesforce is beneficial.

  • Understanding of business insurance and risk management concepts within an organizational finance setting.

  • Strong project management, communication, and problem-solving abilities with close attention to detail and accuracy.

  • Ability to adapt in fast-changing environments and work effectively with internal stakeholders to improve systems and decision-making.
