Job title: Software Engineer - Virtualization & Container Technology
About the Role Canonical is building a globally distributed team focused on virtualization, container technology, and related open source infrastructure. This home-based, worldwide role targets software engineers who want to work on next-generation open source VMM, container technology, and related networking and storage projects, spanning from the kernel to userspace.
What You'll Do
- Contribute to virtualization and container technology across the software stack—from kernel namespaces and VMMs to user-space tooling and REST APIs.
- Work with Go, Rust, or C/C++ to build high-performance, secure, and operable components for projects such as RustVMM, LXD, MicroK8s, Charmed Kubernetes, and OpenStack.
- Help publish, maintain, and harden Docker images for open source ecosystems, with an emphasis on quality, consistency, and security.
- Collaborate with globally distributed teams across multiple time zones, meeting in person 2–4 times per year at in-person locations around the world.
- Contribute to cloud infrastructure, isolation, orchestration, and management tooling and to projects like OVN/OVS and Ceph.
What We're Looking For
- Exceptional Go, Rust, or C/C++ software engineering skills and a track record of shipping open source code.
- Expert knowledge of virtual machine monitors (VMM), kernel networking, and storage capabilities.
- Experience building security-critical, performance-critical, and mission-critical software.
- Background in containers, sandboxing, workload orchestration, and cloud infrastructure.
- Ability to work effectively in a globally distributed, collaborative environment and to contribute across kernel, userspace, and tooling.
- Open source contributions and a passion for open development models.
Nice to Have
- Experience with RustVMM, LXD, Kubernetes projects such as MicroK8s and Charmed Kubernetes, OpenStack, OVN/OVS, Ceph.
- Experience in building and publishing Docker images with strong security practices.
- Proficiency in Python and other scripting languages.
