About this role

Software Engineer Intern

NetApp develops innovative storage systems that combine software, firmware, and hardware. The Storage Media Engineering team creates and maintains the tools used to qualify drives and support reliable product releases.

As an Engineering Intern, you will contribute to code development for the NetApp XDATE drive test application. Working with software, test, and drive engineers, you will help design, implement, debug, and validate application features that improve drive qualification efficiency, test execution, and results analysis.

This internship is suited for a creative, team-oriented, and curious engineer who learns quickly, writes quality code, and is motivated to deliver practical results.

Essential Functions:

  • Develop, enhance, and maintain code for the NetApp XDATE drive test application.
  • Translate engineering and test requirements into clear software designs and implementation tasks.
  • Create and execute unit, integration, and application-level tests for new and modified code.
  • Debug software and test-execution issues, identify root causes, and implement reliable fixes.
  • Document code, designs, test results, known issues, and recommended solutions.
  • Participate in code reviews and incorporate feedback to improve maintainability, usability, and quality.
  • Work closely with XDATE tool engineers and drive qualification engineers to define application and test requirements.
  • Help improve test automation, data handling, logging, reporting, and developer workflows.
  • Participate in technical discussions about application architecture, drive testing, and qualification use cases.
  • Take on additional assignments that contribute positively to team, department, and company goals.

Job Requirements

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Coursework or project experience in software development using a modern programming language.
  • Familiarity with software design, debugging, source control, and test automation concepts.
  • Ability to collaborate within a team of engineers and deliver high-quality work against project goals.
  • Strong aptitude for learning new technologies, processes, and engineering practices.
  • Ability to follow standard software engineering principles and development practices.
  • Creative and methodical approach to problem solving.
  • Familiarity with development tools, version control, and productivity applications; exposure to storage systems or hardware testing is a plus.

Responsibility and Interaction:

Responsibility:

  • Complete a mix of well-defined development tasks and exploratory assignments with guidance from experienced engineers.
  • Apply academic knowledge and developing technical skills to solve routine to moderately complex software and test problems.
  • Deliver assigned XDATE features, fixes, tests, and documentation in coordination with the project team.

Interaction:

  • Interact primarily with your manager, mentor, and technical team on assigned XDATE projects, with occasional collaboration across other engineering functions.
  • Receive general direction for routine work and detailed guidance for new assignments, with ongoing reviews of progress, code, and priorities.
  • Work under the direction of a mentor or project lead and contribute meaningfully to team deliverables.

Education & Experience

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Academic, personal, or internship project experience demonstrating code development, debugging, testing, and completion of technical assignments.

Compensation:

Final compensation packages are competitive and in line with industry standards, reflecting a variety of factors, and include a comprehensive benefits package. Benefits may vary by country and region, and further details will be provided as part of the recruitment process.

At NetApp, we embrace a hybrid working environment designed to strengthen connection, collaboration, and culture for all employees. This means that most roles will have some level of in-office and/or in-person expectations, which will be shared during the recruitment process.
