About the Role The Wikimedia Foundation is seeking a Software Engineer III to join the Editing Team, working on the VisualEditor and related editing tools to improve Wikipedia's editing experience. You will contribute to open-source software in a distributed, consensus-driven environment, prioritizing accessibility and performance while maintaining a healthy work-life balance.
What You'll Do
- Improve the Wikipedia product experience by fixing bugs and implementing new functionality.
- Iterate on new features with engineers, product managers, designers, other teams, and community members.
- Write multilingual, accessible, and performant code using JavaScript and PHP.
- Build on top of the MediaWiki API ecosystem.
- Instrument components to monitor feature behavior and quality characteristics.
What We're Looking For
- 2-5 years of related professional or open-source software engineering experience.
- Experience with object-oriented development using a scripting language (such as JavaScript, PHP, Python or Ruby). Most of our work is in JavaScript, PHP and CSS.
- Focused software engineering: experience writing unit tests and using version control.
- Strong written communication skills.
- Qualities: desire to contribute to knowledge equity and open access; ability to communicate clearly in synchronous and asynchronous channels; strong aptitude in algorithms and data structures; willingness to participate in technical discussions and code reviews.
Nice to Have
- Experience building a rich-text editor.
- Experience working with large, legacy codebases.
- A history of editing on Wikimedia projects.
- A history of open-source contribution.
- Bachelor's degree in computer science or mathematics, or equivalent.
Compensation & Benefits
- Annual pay range for US-based applicants: US$95,164 to US$148,729, with country-specific adjustments based on location.
