About this role
About the Role
The Maps Search team builds features and experiences that expand how people use Search at Uber. Our work connects search, maps, and personalized discovery to help users explore places and find relevant offerings across Uber’s businesses, including Rides, Eats, and Ads.
As a Backend Software Engineer on the team, you’ll build the services and APIs behind these experiences. You’ll work alongside backend, mobile, and machine learning engineers, as well as product managers and data scientists, to turn ideas into reliable, performant features. Projects include cross line of business functionality in search, exploration and local discovery, with opportunities to build new experiences from the ground up.
This is a hands-on, product-focused engineering role. You’ll own well-scoped features from technical design through implementation, experimentation, deployment, and production monitoring, with support from experienced engineers. You’ll tackle distributed systems challenges while seeing how your work improves the customer experience and contributes to Uber’s Growth.
What You Will Do
- Build customer-facing features: Develop backend services and APIs that power search, map exploration, and local discovery experiences.
- Own delivery end to end: Take well-scoped features from design through implementation, testing, rollout, and monitoring, collaborating with senior engineers on broader architectural decisions.
- Engineer for scale and reliability: Improve service performance, scalability, and resilience, balancing customer needs with maintainable technical solutions.
- Collaborate across disciplines: Partner with mobile engineers, machine learning engineers, product managers, and data scientists to deliver cohesive experiences.
- Experiment and learn: Support A/B tests, instrument features, and use results to understand customer impact and guide improvements.
- Maintain engineering quality: Write clean, well-tested code, participate in design and code reviews, and contribute to shared engineering practices.
- Support production systems: Investigate issues, strengthen observability, and contribute to the operational health of the services you build.
Basic Qualifications

- Proficiency in a backend programming language such as Go, Java, or a comparable language.
- Strong foundations in data structures, algorithms, API design, and software testing.
- Experience working with databases and distributed systems, with an understanding of performance and reliability trade-offs.
- Ability to deliver well-scoped projects independently, communicate technical decisions clearly, and collaborate effectively with teammates and cross-functional partners.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with search systems, including retrieval, ranking, or search indices.
- Familiarity with personalization, recommendation systems, or integrating machine learning capabilities into backend services.
- Experience working with geospatial data, maps, points of interest, or location-based products.
- Familiarity with A/B testing, product analytics, and metrics-driven feature development.
- Experience operating production services, including monitoring, debugging, and safe deployment practices.
- Experience building consumer-facing products in collaboration with mobile engineering teams.
