About this role
We tackle the most complex problems in quantitative finance, by bringing scientific clarity to financial complexity.
From our London HQ, we unite world-class researchers and engineers in an environment that values deep exploration and methodical execution - because the best ideas take time to evolve. Together we’re building a world-class platform to amplify our teams’ most powerful ideas.
As part of our engineering team, you’ll shape the platforms and tools that drive high-impact research - designing systems that scale, accelerate discovery and support innovation across the firm.
Take the next step in your career.
The role
We build the workflow orchestrator at the heart of G-Research's compute. A single DAG can contain millions of jobs and hundreds of users run workflows concurrently across our large, multi-site compute farm. Researchers describe what they need, and we handle the underlying infrastructure and complexity at scale. This makes our work critical to enabling quant research.
At this scale, even simple tasks become complex. The challenge lies in maintaining orchestration performance as DAGs grow, ensuring service resilience and giving users real-time visibility of their progress.
What you'll work on:
- Platform scaling as workflows grow towards billions of jobs
- The libraries and APIs that quants use every day
- The real-time UI and its backend service
- Observability: metrics and alerting
How we build it:
A strongly typed domain model is central to everything we build. A surprising amount of our software is really an interpreter for a small DSL: describe what you want as data, then interpret it.
Data is easy to test, so we lean heavily on property-based and model-based testing. We use AI coding agents extensively, and types and tests are how we check their work.
What matters most is how you think about correctness, failure and design. Functional programming experience is a bonus, and if you know why the difference between an applicative and a monad matters when orchestrating a DAG, we'd especially like to talk.
How we work:
-
We are a co-located and growing team and our users are just down the hall. We work with them every day, so you'll see the impact of what you build almost immediately.
-
We agree goals with our users and decide how to meet them. Process is light, infrastructure is self-service and you own what you ship. Our stack:
-
F# for the core services
-
Python and .NET SDKs for users
-
A TypeScript/React UI
-
Postgres, moving to CockroachDB
-
On-prem Kubernetes for hosting services
Who are we looking for?
The ideal candidate will have the following skills and experience:
- You enjoy hard, open-ended problems and see them through to a solution you'd stand behind
- While you care about users and convenience, you design APIs to be hard to misuse first
- You think about what a system guarantees when things fail and you'd rather it stopped than carried on giving wrong results
- When something breaks, you dig until you understand why
- You've built production systems at scale and know what it takes to keep them reliable and performant as they grow
- You measure before you optimise and build systems that tell you when they're unhealthy
- You support design arguments with a prototype or a benchmark
- You can explain a hard trade-off to a quant, an infrastructure engineer and someone less close to the detail, at the right level for each
- You've written serious code in a functional language (F#, OCaml, Haskell, Erlang, Elixir, Scala, Rust or similar), or you're keen to
We’re hiring across all experience levels and value your approach to problem-solving over familiarity with a specific programming language.
Why should you apply?
- Highly competitive compensation plus annual discretionary bonus
- Lunch provided (via Just Eat for Business) and dedicated barista bar
- 35 days' annual leave
- 9% company pension contributions
- Informal dress code and excellent work/life balance
- Comprehensive healthcare and life assurance
- Cycle-to-work scheme
- Monthly company events
- Experience days: all-expenses-paid, bucket-list outings with colleagues, from Michelin-star tasting menus to European day trips.
