About the Role
At Atlassian, Software Engineers develop backend services and data-heavy platforms. This role focuses on building scalable distributed systems and resilient data pipelines, with opportunities to operate in multi-cloud environments.
What You'll Do

Design and implement backend services in JVM languages (Java/Kotlin)

Build and optimize data pipelines using Kafka, Kinesis, SQS, Flink or similar

Implement change data capture, backpressure management, and delivery semantics for resilient pipelines

Design for high throughput and low latency across distributed workflows

Deploy and operate services across cloud providers (AWS/GCP) with infrastructure-as-code, enabling self-service for internal teams

Own tasks and deliver high-quality code; participate in code reviews; collaborate across teams

What We're Looking For

3-5 years of backend engineering experience with distributed systems and data-heavy platforms

Strong proficiency in writing clean, maintainable code; familiarity with the team's languages, tooling, idioms, patterns

Experience operating and optimizing systems at scale; high bar for reliability

Cloud or multi-cloud experience (AWS, GCP) and infrastructure-as-code

Excellent collaboration, communication, and ability to navigate ambiguity

Nice to Have

Hands-on experience with streaming systems and real-time data processing (Kafka, Kinesis, Flink, etc.)

Experience building platform capabilities that enable self-service for internal teams

Prior experience with CDC patterns and data consistency across distributed systems

Base pay: USD 124,700 - 196,225 per year (zone-based); US zones A/B/C ranges indicated in posting
