About this role
Software Development Engineer, Last Mile Platform Services, SDE
Amazon's Last Mile Technology has the operational focus of providing new and different technologies to solve challenges in the last mile delivery space. We want to ensure a top-in-class experience — not only for the customer receiving a package, but for the transporters who deliver millions of them every day. It is in our makeup to drive true innovation in this space.
Building on that concept, the way Amazon speaks to its transporters is one of the most critical systems in Last Mile. The Rabbit Communications Platform owns every surface through which Amazon reaches a Delivery Partner, Delivery Associate, or Flex driver — Newsfeed, push notifications, in-app messaging, automated calls, and automated customer contact — across Android, iOS, and wearables, worldwide. When a severe-weather shelter-in-place directive has to reach a driver in their own language, when a customer's gate code needs to travel from one delivery to the next — those journeys run on what we build.
We are looking for talented Software Development Engineers to design and build these mission-critical backend and client systems. You will work on hard problems at scale and will have the autonomy to deliver impactful solutions. You will be responsible for developing and operating tier-1 communication surfaces: externalizing the Push Notification and Newsfeed APIs so that audience and content platforms like Adobe Marketo directly — with dynamic targeting, segmentation, and A/B testing — instead of engineering being in the loop for every send. You will build the AI-agent comms layer — systems that extract durable facts (access codes, delivery preferences) from driver–customer interactions and route them to downstream systems so the next driver at that address never has to ask again, and Agentic Comms that intercepts delivery issues in real time, opens structured reply channels, and resolves cases as machine-readable state without pulling the driver off-road. You will build in-app reporting surface that lets any transporter flag any issue related to safety, efficiency, productivity, improved experience, etc.
You will learn about building programmable, self-service communication platforms that remove engineering from the critical path; designing AI agents that turn unstructured driver and customer input into structured, actionable state; delivering messages reliably at fleet engineered for offline catch-up, 1-to-N broadcast, and 1-to-1 push; internationalization and localization for a fleet that runs the app in dozens of languages across global markets; integrating with enterprise marketing platforms (Adobe Marketo, UCP) and Amazon's notification and customer-contact ecosystems; and the reliability, latency, and cost standards a Tier-1 platform must hold while it is being run by the team that owns it.
It's always Day 1 at Amazon. Are you up for the challenge?
Key job responsibilities
As a key member of the Last Mile Delivery Technology team you will be an innovator, playing a direct role in shaping and building products that partner teams rely on and customers love on top of Amazon's technology. You will be part of a strong team in a fast-paced, start-up like environment where agile development is embraced, innovation is encouraged, large-scale projects are the norm, and work-life balance is a top priority. We aim to work smarter, not harder, and regularly iterate to maintain and improve work-life balance. As an SDE-II at Amazon, you will have the opportunity to positively impact millions of customers by identifying opportunities, designing solutions, collaborating with world-class engineers and delivering large, impactful, end-to-end projects and improvements.
