About this role
Software Design Engineer
Location(s) Tamsui District, New Taipei
Company Molex
Career Field Engineering
Job Number 196122
Your Job This Software Design Engineer will join that career path. The first assignment is building and deploying software that supports manufacturing of liquid cooling cage assemblies. Eventually you will own other SSG tools besides the liquid cooling manufacturing solutions. This role is not for a single-product specialist.
Our Team The Software Solutions Group (SSG) is the central nervous system of the Copper Solutions Business Unit (CSBU) within the Datacom & Specialty Solutions (DSS) division at Molex. SSG builds Python tools from the ground up for the design, manufacturing, and testing of high-speed electrical interconnects and liquid cooling cage assemblies. Engineers on this team collaborate across the organization to deliver solutions that address challenges in every domain of the business. Our software designers own mature applications used in production facilities around the globe as well as stand-alone tools that solve specific engineering problems.
What You Will Do
- Design, implement, and maintain Python applications used by manufacturing, process, and test engineers.
- Execute a strategy for data collection and gating at all assembly, identification, and test stations.
- Develop custom applications for IIoT device-driven process steps.
- Design and deploy solutions for fixture and tool tracking.
- Create custom dashboards for monitoring production yield and test results.
- Work with product-family and process configuration so new parts and process sequences can be added without rewriting the application.
- Support the manufacturing operation: reproduce failures, ship fixes, and make the tools usable for people who are not software developers.
- Participate in the full development cycle: requirements, design, implementation, code review, verification and validation, documentation, and knowledge sharing.
Who You Are (Basic Qualifications)
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electronics, Systems Engineering, or a closely related field.
- 2+ years designing and owning Python-based applications and libraries (including desktop GUI applications).
- Demonstrated software architecture and design judgment: usability, maintainability, extensibility, and performance, not only feature delivery.
- Experience with Git and a defect-tracking system such as Jira.
- Working knowledge of software verification and validation techniques (automated testing, integration tests, and checking work against requirements).
What Will Put You Ahead
- At least 2 years building and owning software that talks to physical test hardware — instruments, fixtures, robots, sensors, or similar devices — not only software-to-software integrations.
- PyQt (or a similar Python GUI framework) for desktop applications.
- Comfort in a lab or on a manufacturing floor: supporting operators and reproducing hardware-in-the-loop failures.
- Ability to apply scientific Python to user-facing applications: NumPy, Pandas, SciPy, and a conda-based workflow.
- Building reusable libraries, APIs, or configuration-driven frameworks that other engineers and testers use.
- Clear written and verbal communication with non-software customers (manufacturing, test, and product engineers).
- You can point to mid- to long-term software you owned, not only tickets you completed.
- You care about user experience, not only feature implementation.
- You exhibit first-principles thinking and clarify ambiguous requirements.
- You will challenge a weak design or process, including your own, when a better path is available.
- You value knowledge acquisition and sharing, and use mistakes as an opportunity to learn and to teach.
