Job title: Shop Technician
About the Role The Shop Technician operates and maintains safe, clean interdisciplinary fabrication shops for the College of Visual and Performing Arts. The role emphasizes hands-on use of wood, metal, and plastic fabrication equipment and applying digital fabrication techniques to support curriculum, research, and student creation. They provide a safe, intimidation-free learning environment with modern technologies for students and faculty.
What You'll Do
- Provide instruction on safe use of power tools and equipment including, but not limited to, saws, drills, grinders, welders, pressure pots, hand tools, etc., for students, faculty, and staff.
- Maintain health and safety standards as dictated by University and government regulation.
- Maintain and repair equipment as necessary, implement upgrades.
- Maintain inventory of materials, equipment, machine parts, consumables, and hand tools.
- Work with Director of Fabrication Shops to continually review and improve shop practices and interfaces with curriculum.
- Operate and provide instruction on CNC routers, laser cutters, 3D printers, 3D scanners, audio/video equipment, etc., for students, faculty and staff.
- Foster a safe, inclusive learning environment for students and faculty in the shop, supporting research and creative practice with modern equipment.
What We're Looking For
- Education and Experience: College degree in a related field (Industrial Design, Furniture Design, Sculpture, Studio Art, Theatrical Technical Direction, etc.) or relevant work experience.
- 2+ years teaching/mentoring in a shop-related field preferred; however, all teaching/mentoring experience will be considered.
- Working knowledge of safety practices and compliance with OSHA regulations required.
- Availability to work on-premises with a regular schedule that includes evenings and weekend shifts.
- Skills & Knowledge: Proficiency in fabrication techniques in wood, metal/foundry, and/or plastics; Digital fabrication skills (3D printing, laser cutting, 3D scanning, CNC routing); proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite, Rhino/RhinoCam, Autodesk Suite (ACAD, Fusion 360), SolidWorks, Inventor; Microsoft Office Suite (Excel/Word).
Nice to Have
- Demonstrated experience with multi-disciplinary fabrication shops and collaboration with curriculum development (preferred).
Compensation & Benefits
- Salary: $26.40 - $26.92 per hour (USD).
- This is a full-time, on-campus position.
