About the Role The Senior Veterinary Pathologist, Pathology Core Chief will provide pathology, histology and clinical pathology support for all animal studies at the Integrated Research Facility-Frederick (IRF-Frederick). The Pathology Core also supports organoid or organ-chip programs, and the role includes overseeing necropsies in a BSL-4 setting, processing tissues, performing immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization and special stains, and generating written reports.
What You'll Do
- Provide pathology services to support animal studies and assist the Federal Task Leader in managing a team of pathology, histology and clinical pathology professionals.
- Coordinate necropsies and sample analyses with research staff; perform gross and histologic examination, special stains, IHC and ISH; develop comprehensive written reports.
- Ensure documentation of gross observations/diagnoses and SOP adherence; support histology and digital pathology operations; contribute to manuscript writing as requested.
- Pursue personal research interests within project scope with concurrence of the project lead; prepare manuscripts for peer-reviewed publications and presentations at conferences.
- Travel as needed (0-10%).
What We're Looking For
- Board-certified Veterinary Pathologist (DVM, ACVP); PhD preferred.
- Experience in biocontainment (BSL-3 or BSL-4) with BSL-4 experience preferred; direct staff management experience required.
- Strong leadership, mentorship and collaboration skills; ability to manage a team and coordinate with research staff.
- Expertise in necropsy, histology/histopathology, histomorphometry, immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization, digital pathology.
- Must be able to work in a BSL-4 setting with select agents and be enrolled in the NIAID-IRF Frederick Biosurety program, including passing and maintaining Tier-III security clearance.
- Education: Doctorate; relevant advanced degrees preferred.

- Hourly pay of $99.43 up to 40 hours per week.
