Senior Transportation Systems Engineer

Overall work responsibilities will involve providing both technical and program management support to a variety of toll and transportation organizations throughout North America. Efforts will include varying levels of support related to toll and transportation systems engineering, project planning, project development, system procurement, implementation oversight, performance monitoring and operations. Additional responsibilities may include business development, client outreach, proposal preparation support and other general marketing efforts.

Qualified candidates shall have a strong demonstrated experience in supporting the design and implementation of toll and transportation systems and related infrastructure. Specific work assignments may require approximately 25% travel to provide on-site project support.

Summary of essential job functions

• Support the procurement, implementation and operations of toll and transportation systems.
• Provide subject matter expertise on toll and transportation systems, connected vehicle technologies, transportation communication networks, and emerging mobility technologies.
• Conduct risk and issue assessment, tracking and mitigation on toll system implementation projects.
• Ensure that all plans, documents and deliverables provided by system integrators meet project requirements and industry best practices.
• Track and resolve issues that arise during system implementations including issues related to schedule, functionality, performance, requirements, and coordination.
• Provide validation and operational oversight of toll and transportation systems and technologies, verifying conformances with Key Performance Indicators, requirements and client expectations.
• Provide oversight and verification of equipment and technologies installed by system integrators.
• Monitor critical work activities, schedule updates, system installation logistics and help facilitate the resolution of any conflicts.
• Support continuous improvement for toll and transportation systems through process enhancements and automation, and the use of emerging technologies.
• Assist in resolving any design, operational and maintenance issues with system integrators.
• Establish and maintain effective written and verbal communications with client staff, consultants and contractors to ensure project success.
• Support toll and transportation operations programs including electronic revenue collection, managed lanes, corridor management initiatives, traffic management systems, and connected vehicle deployments.
• Provide technical and strategic guidance to agency managers and project stakeholders regarding toll and transportation technologies.
• Lead the development of systems engineering deliverables including Concept of Operations, Systems Engineering Management Plans, System
• Documents, Interface Control Documents, and Verification and Validation Plans.
• Lead the development and review of toll and transportation system architectures, interface designs, integration strategies and technology roadmaps.

Minimum requirements

• Educational background in Engineering, Science, Technology, or similar.
• 15+ years of progressive systems engineering, transportation technology, intelligent transportation systems (ITS) and tolling experience
• 10+ years of experience supporting transportation technology programs, including electronic tolling systems, connected vehicle technologies, and ITS.
• Direct experience and understanding of electronic tolling systems, managed lanes, and electronic revenue collection technologies.
• Experience developing estimates, cost models, business cases, lifecycle cost analyses, and funding strategies for toll and transportation technology projects.
• In depth understanding of the toll and transportation industry such as technology trends, implementations, operations and maintenance.
• Knowledge of toll operations and maintenance organizational functions and practices.
• Ability to deliver task and project assignments within expected timeframes, budget and level of quality expected by the client.
• Experience in managing client relationships by recognizing and addressing client needs and expectations.
• Proven ability to work effectively in a multi-disciplined team environment and provide effective client support in a rapid-evolving environment.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills including technical documentation, requirements development, stakeholder engagement and client communications.
• Experience supporting business development and capture activities including client engagement, pursuit strategy, opportunity development, proposal preparation, and teaming strategy.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Microsoft Project, Microsoft OneDrive, and Microsoft Teams.
