Job title: Senior Substation Engineer

The Planet Group is seeking a Senior Substation Engineer to lead the design deliverables for new and modified high-voltage substations (13 kV to 765 kV). The role guides projects from concept through construction, ensuring designs meet budget, client needs, and industry standards. Based in Houston, TX, you will collaborate with the project team to deliver robust substation packages.

What You'll Do

• Lead the preparation and development of substation design packages (physical arrangement above/below grade, protective relaying and control, grounding, lightning analysis, lighting and security).
• Lead substation calculations (insulation, AC station service, DC systems and battery sizing, voltage drop, cable sizing, conduit fill).
• Prepare design sketches, cost estimates, equipment specifications, bill of materials, and other deliverables.
• Apply advanced knowledge of IEEE, NESC, and other standards; lead field inspections on public/private utility systems.
• Manage project schedule and budget; ensure deliverables meet internal QA/QC guidelines and client satisfaction.
• Lead proposals with schedule and budget estimates; develop and maintain client relationships.
• Execute complex assignments using advanced tools, driving new or improved processes and methods.
• Identify, communicate, and resolve issues on projects as needed.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

What We're Looking For

• Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related ABET-accredited program and 7 years of substation project or related experience; consulting experience preferred; or Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or related ABET program with successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam and 7 years of substation experience; consulting experience preferred.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills; strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office; strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
• Demonstrated critical thinking and leadership abilities; ability to work in a collaborative team environment.
• Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred.
• Must be able to apply diversified engineering knowledge to broad assignments and devise new approaches.

Nice to Have

• PE license preferred.
• Consulting experience preferred.
• FE exam completion and engineering technology pathway iterations.

Compensation & Benefits

• Salary: $150,000 — $220,000 per year.
