About the Role Databricks is seeking a Senior Staff Software Engineer to join the Delta DML backend team in Amsterdam. You will design, develop, and maintain robust backend systems powering Databricks workspaces, delivering high QPS, low latency, and scalability, while providing technical leadership and mentorship to the team.
What You'll Do
- Design, develop, and maintain backend systems powering Databricks workspaces.
- Build the next-generation platform for serving workspace assets with high throughput, low latency, and reliability.
- Provide technical leadership, mentorship, and guidance to junior engineers; help improve coding practices and system designs.
- Plan and lead complex technical projects across multiple teams; own roadmaps and drive implementation.
- Lead sprint planning, delegate work, and participate in project planning; drive automation and operability of services.
- Debug, measure performance, and optimize production clusters at scale.
What We're Looking For
- 15+ years of industry experience building and supporting large-scale distributed systems.
- Strong foundation in algorithms and data structures; real-world use cases.
- Experience delivering customer value and driving initiatives toward customer satisfaction.
- BS/MS/PhD in Computer Science or related majors, or equivalent experience.
- Ability to work toward a multi-year vision with incremental deliverables.
- Experience leading technical projects and mentoring others; strong cross-team collaboration.
- Familiarity with Delta Lake/open-source ecosystems and contribution experience (preferred).
Nice to Have
- Experience with Delta Lake and open source contributions (Delta/Iceberg formats).
- Prior leadership experience and cross-team collaboration.
- Experience with high-throughput, low-latency backend systems in a Databricks environment.
