Job title: Senior Staff Software Engineer - Delta
About the Role Join the Delta DML team at Databricks as a Senior Staff Software Engineer to design, develop, and maintain robust backend systems powering Databricks workspaces. You will drive high QPS, low latency, reliable services at massive scale, and provide technical leadership and mentorship to the team.
What You'll Do
- Design, build, and maintain backend systems that power Databricks workspaces with a focus on performance and reliability.
- Deliver a next-generation platform for serving workspace assets, ensuring high throughput and low latency.
- Lead complex technical projects, coordinate with multiple teams, and take ownership of new initiatives.
- Mentor junior engineers, contribute to coding practices, and lead sprint planning and project planning.
- Proactively address production issues, perform deep debugging, and optimize performance on large production clusters.
- Introduce tools to improve automation and operability of services.
- Influence product roadmaps and drive architecture decisions with a customer-focused mindset.
What We're Looking For
- 15+ years of industry experience building and supporting large-scale distributed systems.
- Strong foundation in algorithms and data structures with real-world applicability.
- Demonstrated ability to work toward multi-year visions with incremental deliverables.
- Experience driving company initiatives toward customer satisfaction.
- BS/MS/PhD in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent experience.
- Excellent written and verbal communication, leadership, and mentorship capabilities.
Nice to Have
- Experience with Delta Lake, Delta DML, or related open source efforts to unify Delta and Iceberg formats.
- Prior experience contributing to large open source projects or platform-level services.
