Senior Staff Engineer

Job Description

We are seeking a Senior Staff Engineer in Wind and Solar Energy to join our renewable energy advisory team and lead the execution of resource and energy yield assessments for utility-scale wind and solar photovoltaic projects. The successful candidate will provide senior technical leadership across wind and solar resource analysis, energy production modeling, uncertainty and loss assessments, and bankable technical reporting for developers, investors, lenders, and other project stakeholders. The role includes working with meteorological, remote-sensing, satellite, and plant-design datasets; performing wind flow, wake, layout, and PV performance analyses; and supporting project development, financing, and due diligence activities. The candidate will collaborate with multidisciplinary and international teams, maintain a strong understanding of the Brazilian renewables market, and communicate effectively with clients to identify needs, explain technical findings, and develop trusted long-term relationships. Extensive experience with industry-standard wind assessment tools, PVsyst, solar resource assessment methodologies, and client-facing advisory work is essential.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and execute bankable wind and solar resource and energy yield assessments for utility-scale projects.

  • Analyze and validate wind-resource data from met masts, LiDAR, and SoDAR systems, as well as solar-resource data from ground stations, satellite sources, and other relevant datasets.

  • Develop long-term wind and solar resource estimates and gross and net energy production forecasts.

  • Perform wind flow, wake, micrositing, and wind farm layout analyses using industry-standard software.

  • Perform solar resource assessments, PV system modeling, loss analysis, and energy yield simulations using PVsyst and other relevant tools.

  • Assess photovoltaic plant design parameters, including module and inverter selection, DC/AC ratio, array layout, orientation, shading, and electrical losses.

  • Quantify project uncertainties, energy losses, performance risks, and exceedance probabilities for wind and solar projects.

  • Design and support wind and solar measurement campaigns, data collection strategies, and resource-monitoring plans.

  • Conduct turbine suitability, photovoltaic technology, site-specific, and climatic technical evaluations.

  • Optimize wind farm and solar PV layouts to maximize project performance, constructability, and value.

  • Provide senior technical review and quality assurance for resource and energy yield assessments prepared by other team members.

  • Support technical due diligence, independent engineering, financing, and transaction advisory assignments for wind and solar assets.

  • Prepare and present clear, bankable technical reports and recommendations for developers, investors, lenders, and other stakeholders.

  • Engage directly with clients to understand their objectives, explain complex technical findings, address questions, and identify follow-on advisory opportunities.

  • Monitor market, regulatory, technology, and project-development trends in Brazil and the broader renewable energy sector.

  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary and international teams throughout project development, financing, construction, and operation stages.

  • Mentor junior engineers and contribute to the development of internal methodologies, tools, and best practices.

  • Maintain expected billable time of approximately 70%.

  • Undertake business travel of approximately 10%.

  • Represent UL Solutions at client meetings and external organizations, providing expert advice to influence industry approaches and elevate UL Solutions’ thought leadership in the market.

  • Assist with other duties as assigned within Renewables Advisory activities.

Qualifications

  • At least 10 years of relevant professional experience in renewable energy engineering, including substantial experience in wind and solar resource and energy yield assessments.

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Engineering, Atmospheric Sciences, Physics, or a related field.

  • Demonstrated experience leading or independently delivering bankable wind and solar energy assessments for utility-scale projects.

  • Proficiency with wind assessment tools such as OpenWind, Windographer, WAsP, WindPRO, or equivalent software.

  • Advanced proficiency with PVsyst and strong knowledge of solar resource assessment, PV performance modeling, and energy loss analysis.

  • Experience processing met mast, LiDAR, SoDAR, ground-based solar measurement, and satellite-derived resource datasets.

  • Strong knowledge of long-term resource correction, uncertainty analysis, exceedance probabilities, and bankable energy assessment methodologies.

  • Experience performing wind flow modeling, wake analysis, wind farm micrositing, and solar PV layout and design evaluations.

  • Good understanding of the Brazilian renewables market, including key market participants, project-development practices, and relevant commercial and regulatory considerations.

  • Excellent client-facing communication, presentation, and relationship-building skills, with the ability to translate complex technical findings into clear business implications.

  • Strong analytical, technical writing, project leadership, and quality-review capabilities.

  • Ability to work independently, lead assignments, mentor colleagues, and collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary and international teams.

  • Fluency in English is required; Portuguese proficiency is strongly preferred for engagement with clients and stakeholders in Brazil.

  • Offshore wind experience and Python programming skills are considered a plus.
