About this role
Senior Software Engineer
USA
- Job: Engineering
- Schedule: FULL_TIME
- Req ID: 26244
About the opportunity
Pearson is expanding the engineering capability behind OnVUE. We are looking for experienced full-stack engineers who can design, build and operate complex enterprise software using Java, Spring Boot, Angular and REST APIs.
We have opportunities for strong senior individual contributors and for engineers ready to combine hands-on development with squad leadership. You do not need to decide which pathway fits before applying. We will explore your experience and interests during the recruitment process.
Choose the pathway that fits your experience
Senior Software Engineer
You will own complex technical work from design through delivery and operational readiness. You will contribute to architecture and technical decisions, improve engineering quality, troubleshoot critical issues, mentor colleagues and help modernise the platform.
Senior Software Engineer, Squad Lead
You will remain hands-on while taking responsibility for the day-to-day technical delivery and results of a squad. You will guide engineers, coordinate work, remove obstacles, influence technical direction and work closely with business and functional leaders. This is technical and delivery leadership, not formal HR people management.
What you will do
- Design and deliver complex, distributed full-stack solutions using Java, Spring Boot, Angular and REST APIs.
- Build and operate highly available, scalable enterprise applications.
- Contribute to technical design, estimation, roadmap planning and platform modernisation.
- Identify and address technical debt, performance bottlenecks, reliability concerns and operational risk.
- Lead troubleshooting and root-cause analysis for critical production issues.
- Partner with Quality Engineering to strengthen testing, automation and quality by design.
- Support release planning, deployment, observability, security and operational readiness.
- Mentor engineers, review technical work and champion effective engineering practices.
- For the squad-lead pathway, coordinate day-to-day squad delivery, remove blockers and take responsibility for team outcomes.
What we are looking for
- At least five years of professional software development experience.
- Strong hands-on full-stack capability across Java, Spring Boot, Angular and REST APIs.
- Experience designing and delivering complex, distributed enterprise systems.
- Strong software design, system architecture, troubleshooting and engineering-quality skills.
- Clear communication and the ability to explain technical decisions and trade-offs to different audiences.
- A bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering or equivalent practical experience.
- For the squad-lead pathway, demonstrated technical leadership, mentoring and ownership of team delivery. This may come from formal or informal leadership experience.
Experience that would be useful
Experience with Azure, Kubernetes, cloud-native delivery, DevOps and CI/CD would be valuable. Exposure to applications using audio and video, accessibility and WCAG, observability, application security, performance engineering, LLMs or AI-assisted development tools would also be useful. These are differentiators rather than universal requirements.
Location & Working Pattern
United States. Remote within the United States. Any state restrictions or travel expectations will be shared during the recruitment process.
Compensation
Compensation at Pearson is influenced by factors including skill set, experience, location and the scope of responsibilities associated with the role selected through the hiring process. The full-time salary range for:
Senior Software Engineer: $120,000 - $130,000
Senior Software Engineer, Squad Lead: $135,000 - $145,000
This position is eligible to participate in an annual incentive program, and information on benefits offered is here. Applications will be accepted through November 9th, 2026. This window may be extended depending on business needs.
Why Join Pearson?
