Senior Software Engineer II

Senior Software Engineer II to join Wise for Banks team and shape the technical direction of the systems powering Wise’s global payment network. You will operate at the intersection of engineering, product, and partnerships, driving architecture, scalability, and reliability of the infrastructure that enables banks to connect to Wise. You’ll leverage deep expertise in Java, Spring Boot, Kafka, and PostgreSQL to design highly available services powering partner integrations.

What You'll Do

• Lead the design and development of highly scalable and resilient services in Java and Spring Boot within Wise’s microservices architecture, powering the global payments network.
• Apply domain-driven design to model complex financial domains and build robust, scalable solutions that support Wise's partner ecosystem.
• Drive development and adoption of event-driven architectures using Kafka or similar messaging systems, ensuring reliability, observability, and scalability with increasing volumes.
• Architect and optimize relational databases (PostgreSQL), ensuring strong data modeling, performance, and reliability across critical financial workflows.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams (Product, Implementation, Solutions Engineering, Business Development) to support partner integrations and expand the Wise platform globally.
• Provide technical leadership across teams, influence architecture decisions, contribute to platform-level improvements, and maintain high engineering standards.
• Participate in code reviews, architecture discussions, and technical planning; champion best practices in distributed systems, reliability, and maintainability.
• Mentor and support engineers, growing technical capability and fostering a culture of learning, ownership, and collaboration.

What We're Looking For

• Extensive hands-on experience with Java and Spring Boot in production environments.
• Strong experience designing and operating large-scale distributed systems and microservices architectures.
• Proven experience building or operating event-driven systems using Kafka or similar messaging platforms.
• Strong knowledge of PostgreSQL or other relational databases, including schema design and query optimization for high-scale systems.
• Experience applying domain-driven design to model complex business domains and design scalable systems is a plus.
• Track record architecting and delivering complex, high-scale systems.
• Demonstrates strong technical leadership and cross-team influence.
• Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
