About this role
Job title: Senior Software Engineer, Core Experiences
About the Role
The Wikimedia Foundation is looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join the App Growth team within the Core Experiences engineering group. This is a web-first, full-stack role focused on building features and platform integrations that enable seamless handoffs between the web and apps, across mobile web and native surfaces. It is not a native iOS or Android role and requires overlapping work hours with the rest of the team. This position is fully remote.
To ensure collaboration, the role requires at least four hours of your workday between 14:00 UTC and 21:00 UTC.
What You'll Do
- Delivery and enablement: lead the team in delivering medium complexity initiatives from technical discovery through delivery; break down initiatives into features, drive estimation, manage scope, identify risks, and balance quality, velocity, maintainability, and user impact.
- Frontend Implementation: improve mobile Wikipedia product experiences for a global, multilingual audience across web and app surfaces; lead system design for medium-sized projects and build accessible, adaptable, and scalable components.
- Backend Implementation: own RESTful APIs from schema and contract design through monitoring and iteration; enable simple to consume, reliable, and evolvable data pipelines for mobile and web clients at scale.
- Quality, testing and observability: build and improve systems that are easy to test, observe, and debug; instrument features for deeper analysis by Product Analysts.
- Cross-functional collaboration: partner with product managers, designers, analysts, and native app engineers to balance user needs, technical constraints, platform expectations, and delivery timelines.
- Prioritisation: identify high-impact technical opportunities and risks across a quarter; align the team on priorities, capacity, and outcomes.
- Mentorship: support the growth and success of others through code reviews, design guidance, pairing, delegation, and fostering a culture of thoughtful ownership.
- Culture and standards: raise team standards in code review, technical design, testing, documentation, accessibility, observability, and decision-making.
- Operational Awareness: plan work with awareness of downstream/upstream effects and support hiring and onboarding.
What We're Looking For
- Bachelor's degree and 5+ years of professional experience building production web applications and services.
- Strong experience with JavaScript/TypeScript, and frameworks such as Vue.js or React, plus at least one backend language (PHP, Python, Java, Go, or similar).
- Experience building responsive or mobile-first web experiences with attention to performance, accessibility, and usability.
- Experience designing and integrating with server-side APIs.
- Experience working in a self-driven, lean environment.
- Commitment to the Wikimedia Foundation's Mission and Values.
Nice to Have
- Experience adding webview-wrapped experiences to existing native mobile apps (iOS or Android).
- Experience launching and maintaining native or cross-platform mobile applications (iOS or Android).
