About the Role
Senior Software Engineer at Atlassian responsible for building and operating backend systems and data-heavy platforms. This role emphasizes scalable distributed architectures across multi-cloud environments and delivering high-quality software that enables internal teams to self-serve.
What You'll Do

Take ownership and accountability for your team's systems, processes, and capabilities to meet goals; work with your team to deliver projects with velocity and high quality; lead through change and ambiguity and help the team adapt.

Define coding techniques and patterns to improve reliability and maintainability; participate in code reviews to set standards; propose technical solutions within your team's domain and navigate ambiguity.

Drive informed decisions for your team by using data; collaborate with product, design, and other functions; communicate clearly and provide timely feedback to colleagues.

Design, build, and operate scalable backend/data pipelines; optimize for high throughput and low latency distributed workflows.

Contribute to platform capabilities that enable self-service for internal teams and support infrastructure-as-code practices.

What We're Looking For
-
5+ years of backend engineering experience with distributed systems and data-heavy platforms

Strong backend engineering experience with JVM-based languages (Java, Kotlin preferred)

Experience with data-heavy platforms and streaming architectures (Kafka, Kinesis, SQS, Flink or similar)

Understanding of CDC, backpressure, delivery semantics, and building resilient data pipelines across distributed systems

Proven ability to operate and optimize systems at scale (high throughput, low latency)

Multi-cloud or cloud-native infrastructure experience (AWS, GCP, or both)

Familiarity with deploying and operating services across cloud providers, cloud primitives (S3, object storage, message queues), infrastructure-as-code, and building self-service platform capabilities

Ownership, leadership, and ability to drive change within a team

Proficiency with the team's codebase, languages, tools, libraries, idioms, and patterns; strong code reviews

Collaboration, data-driven decision making, and ability to influence product, design, and other stakeholders

Compensation & Benefits

Base pay within the new-hire range for US zones: Zone A $180,000-$235,000; Zone B $162,000-$211,500; Zone C $149,400-$195,050 (zone confirmed with recruiter)
