As a proudly employee-owned business, we benefit our clients, our communities, and each other, investing in creating the right space for everyone to feel empowered, included, and valued. About the business unit The Buildings Unit (BLD) has a major presence in Mott MacDonald's regional offices throughout the UK and mainland Europe, providing a wide range of diverse and transferable cross-sector skills across five key Sectors; Advisory, Built Environment, Energy, Transportation and Water. We also provide local services to customers and technical leadership to the rest of the Group in these sectors.

Overview of the role

Our Global Health team is seeking a Principal Consultant or Senior Principal Consultant to help clients plan and deliver health services that are clinically effective, equitable, digitally enabled, sustainable and adaptable to future change.

The successful candidate will work with clients and multidisciplinary teams to understand population and service needs, challenge existing assumptions, develop future models of care and translate them into implementable requirements across services and the built environment. We are interested in candidates who combine strong healthcare-planning fundamentals with curiosity about how AI, data, digital integration, advancements in medicine and changing public expectations will influence future healthcare.

The successful candidate will have experience of delivering some of the following services:

  • Population health assessment, including the impacts of health inequalities, prevention and earlier intervention
  • Activity modelling and capacity planning
  • Mapping and redesign of patient, staff, information, equipment, medication, supply and visitor flows across acute, primary and community care
  • Integrated models of care spanning acute, primary, neighbourhood, community and home-based services across physical and mental health
  • Virtual, remote and hybrid pathways, including the implications of digital integration for future models of care
  • Schedules of accommodation, clinical and non-clinical adjacencies, massing, stacking and spatial planning
  • Healthcare design review with architects, engineers, operational teams and clinical users

Not every commission will result in a capital solution. The role requires the ability to identify when service, workforce, digital or operational change may provide a better response than additional estate.

The global health team is comprised of a wide range of health-related professionals including healthcare planners, healthcare management consultants and digital healthcare specialists. This team works closely with other multidisciplinary teams across Mott MacDonald’s technical and engineering disciplines, as well as our Estates and Facilities and Sustainability teams.

Reporting to the Healthcare Planning Lead, the Senior Consultant will support the delivery of commissions and workstreams, ensuring delivery to agreed scope, quality, programme and budget, in line with client requirements and Mott MacDonald standards.

The role may suit candidates with experience in consultancy, the NHS or an international health system, health architecture, service transformation or another relevant healthcare environment.

The role may require some travelling in the UK and possibly internationally.

Key responsibilities and duties include:

  • Develop future models of care spanning hospital, community, neighbourhood, home, virtual and hybrid delivery
  • Assess how changes in medicine, technology, workforce, public expectations and care delivery may affect future activity, capacity and infrastructure requirements
  • Undertake demand, capacity, utilisation and scenario modelling, with clear assumptions, limitations and audit trails
  • Apply horizon scanning, international benchmarking and critical evidence appraisal to identify relevant good practice and emerging innovation
  • Translate clinical and operational requirements, national policy, international best practice and research into service models, functional content, schedules of accommodation, adjacency and flow requirements and clinical briefs
  • Review healthcare designs at 1:500, 1:200 and 1:50, working with clinicians, architects, engineers and operational teams to test function, flow, flexibility and deliverability
  • Integrate digital, data, and smart-infrastructure principles from the outset of planning
  • Use approved digital and AI-enabled tools responsibly to improve research, analysis, modelling, quality assurance and productivity, while retaining accountability for the accuracy and integrity of outputs
  • Design and facilitate inclusive workshops, interviews and decision-making processes with clinical, operational, patient, community and executive stakeholders
  • Develop options, recommendations and business-case inputs that balance quality, access, affordability, sustainability, risk and achievability
  • Support operational readiness, transition planning, benefits realisation and post-implementation evaluation
  • Produce concise, compelling and visually clear reports, presentations and decision-support material for different audiences
  • Work with senior team members to lead defined commissions and workstreams, and manage delivery to agreed scope, quality, programme and budget
  • Contribute to technical excellence by sharing knowledge, developing reusable methods and coaching colleagues
  • Build trusted client relationships and contribute to proposals, thought leadership, service development and market growth

Candidate specification

The successful candidate must be able to possess and demonstrate the following skills and personal attributes:

  • Degree/masters in a health-related subject or equivalent professional experience
  • Experience in healthcare planning, clinical strategy, service transformation, health analytics, healthcare infrastructure or a closely related field
  • Ability to work across different health-system, cultural, policy and regulatory contexts, adapting approaches rather than assuming that UK models are directly transferable
  • Strong understanding of how population need, clinical pathways, workforce, operational processes, technology and the built environment interact
  • Ability to analyse quantitative and qualitative evidence and turn it into clear, defensible recommendations
  • Experience of demand, capacity, utilisation, pathway, process or scenario modelling
  • Ability to challenge assumptions constructively and make clear, defensible recommendations where evidence is incomplete or stakeholders hold competing views
  • Strong written, verbal and visual communication skills, including the ability to make complex or sensitive matters accessible to different audiences
  • Experience of planning and facilitating effective stakeholder engagement
  • Digital confidence, including the ability to work with data, analytical tools and AI-enabled productivity tools responsibly. Familiarity, or a willingness to learn one or more: Power BI, GIS, Python, R and/or simulation tools
  • Commercial awareness, including understanding scope, budget, programme, risk and client value
  • Track record of leading workstreams or smaller commissions
  • Experience managing client relationships and providing advice to senior stakeholders
  • Evidence of contributing to proposals, client development, thought leadership, or service innovation
