About TrainAI

Training or fine-tuning artificial intelligence (AI) requires data. LOTS of data. However, not just any data will do – our clients need responsible AI data that’s targeted, accurate and reliable to ensure machine learning (ML) success. But preparing AI training data is a monumental task that can take up the vast majority of AI project time, leaving AI teams with precious little time to focus on developing, deploying and evaluating ML models. TrainAI by RWS helps our clients address this challenge head-on.

Job Purpose

As a Senior Platform Engineer in TrainAI, your job is to make our engineers faster. You’ll build and run the AWS platform, tooling and paved paths that let our product teams go from idea to production quickly, safely and on their own. You’ll treat the platform as a product and our developers as its customers.

You’ll own the developer experience end to end: local development, CI/CD, preview environments, infrastructure as code, observability and the guardrails around them. You’ll work in the team, alongside the engineers who use what you build, and in line with the wider RWS platform reference architecture.

Responsibilities

• Developer Enablement

• Build paved paths for creating, deploying and running a service, such as service templates and golden pipelines, so engineers can ship without asking for help.

• Own and improve CI/CD (GitHub Actions). Make builds and tests fast, reliable and easy to understand.

• Provide self-service environments, including per-branch or preview environments and easy, repeatable local development setups.

• Measure and improve developer experience using DORA metrics, build times and developer feedback. Remove the friction you find.

• Write clear documentation and run onboarding so new engineers are productive in their first week.

• Act as an internal consultant. Pair with engineers, review designs and help teams adopt platform patterns.

• Cloud Platform & Infrastructure as Code

• Design and run TrainAI’s AWS foundations, including accounts, networking, identity and access, and security controls.

• Build reusable Terraform modules and templates that product engineers can use directly.

• Automate provisioning, secrets management and environment setup.

• Reliability & Observability

• Provide observability out of the box, including logs, metrics, tracing, dashboards and alerting (Dynatrace).

• Build guardrails such as policy-as-code, cost visibility and secure defaults, so the safe path is also the easy one.

Requirements

• Developer enablement track record: Has built internal platforms, tooling or paved paths that other engineers adopted. Can show how they made a team measurably faster.

• Software engineering background: Writes production-quality code in at least one language (for example Python, TypeScript or Go) and understands what application developers need.

• CI/CD expertise: Has designed and run CI/CD pipelines (ideally GitHub Actions), including caching, parallelisation and safe deployment strategies.

• AWS: Strong hands-on experience building and running infrastructure on AWS.

• Infrastructure as Code: Strong Terraform, including writing reusable modules for others to consume.

• Containers: Experience with Docker and a container platform such as ECS or Kubernetes.

• Communication: Explains things clearly, writes good docs and enjoys helping other engineers succeed.

• Nice to have

• Experience with internal developer portals (for example Backstage) or service catalogues.

• Ephemeral or preview environments per pull request.

• AI-assisted development tooling (for example Claude Code or GitHub Copilot), and making it work well across a team.

• Observability platforms such as Dynatrace, Datadog or OpenTelemetry.

• Policy-as-code (OPA, Checkov) and cloud cost management.

• Supporting data platforms such as Databricks on AWS.
