About the role

  • The Senior Medical Officer will provide experienced clinical care in family medicine, managing patients independently across out-patient and in-patient settings.
  • Responsibilities include supporting consultant-led care, supervising junior medical officers, and contributing to clinical audits, quality improvement, and patient safety activities.

Responsibilities

  • Provide largely independent assessment, diagnosis and management of patients in family medicine, referring complex cases appropriately.

  • Support consultant-led clinics, ward rounds and procedures.

  • Supervise and support medical officers and trainees, contributing to their development.

  • Participate in clinical audit, quality improvement and patient-safety activities.

  • Maintain accurate and timely clinical records.

  • Ensure current MDCN registration/licence in line with internal clinical policy.

  • Work effectively within the multidisciplinary team, coordinating care with other services.

  • Support managed-care/HMO processes through evidence-based, cost-effective practice.

  • Required skills

  • Strong clinical knowledge of family medicine and the ability to manage most cases independently.

  • Ability to supervise and support junior medical officers.

  • Understanding of clinical governance, audit and patient safety.

  • Sound clinical record-keeping.

  • Competent use of hospital clinical systems.

  • Effective communication with patients, families and colleagues.

  • Ability to work within a multidisciplinary team.

  • Nice to have

  • Progress toward a postgraduate fellowship (e.g. primary or part examinations of National Postgraduate Medical College or West African College).Additional training relevant to the area of practice (e.g. life support, clinical skills, quality improvement).

Experience

  • Minimum of 5 years of post-NYSC clinical experience, including progression through Medical Officer grades.

Education

  • Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS or MBChB) from a recognised institution.

  • Completion of the required national housemanship/internship and NYSC, or a valid exemption where applicable.
