Job title: Senior Managing Editor
About the Role The Senior Managing Editor will oversee the peer review and editorial operations for a high-volume medical journal published by the American Cancer Society. This leadership role partners with the Editor-in-Chief to shape journal strategy, ensure adherence to scholarly publishing guidelines, and manage editorial teams and a contracted services provider.
What You'll Do
- Manage peer review and editorial operations for a high-volume medical journal; oversee production, supplements, and the Editors/Editorial Board; supervise the Assistant Managing Editor.
- Partner with the Editor-in-Chief to develop growth strategies and ensure compliance with scholarly publishing guidelines.
- Manage relationships with contracted editorial services provider, monitor time per task, evaluate hours, and set annual budget; facilitate digital tools for peer review and production; provide data-driven analysis.
- Plan and lead annual Section Editor meeting and Editorial Board meetings; refresh and train editors; monitor workloads; foster diversity.
- Oversee editorial policies and issues including research misconduct; investigate and resolve misconduct with Publisher; ensure policy alignment.
- Lead social media, promotion, and marketing efforts for the journal, increasing visibility and engagement in collaboration with internal teams and publisher.
- Provide operational management and budgetary support; oversee revenue-generating supplements and special issues; review competing journals and participate in publisher sales calls.
What We're Looking For
- Bachelor's degree required; 5 years in scientific/academic publishing; 5 years peer review management experience, working with physicians/scientists.
- 4 years of people leadership experience.
- Self-starter with excellent judgement, problem-solving skills, and the ability to juggle multiple priorities.
- Excellent writing and communication skills including writing executive summaries; customer-oriented and tactful; ability to present data to various audiences.
- Advanced analytic and computer skills including compiling complex reports and using advanced Excel and PowerPoint.
- Highly organized with a keen understanding of strict deadlines and deliverables; willingness to be flexible with schedule (occasional international calls across time zones).
Compensation & Benefits
- Salary: $95,000 - $100,000 USD per year.
