About the Role The Senior Manager of R&D at Abbott Vascular in New Brighton leads and manages a team of R&D engineers, spanning long-range strategy to daily product development activities. This role provides technical stewardship, cross-functional leadership, and accountability for delivering high-quality medical devices to market while maintaining legacy products and driving innovation.
What You'll Do
- Hire and retain diverse, highly qualified staff; provide career coaching, growth, and development; accountability for staff performance and for managed subcontractors.
- Foster an innovative, ambitious R&D culture aligned with Abbott Vascular’s core values; translate mission into actionable, quantitative plans; set expectations and monitor progress for direct reports.
- Participate in Abbott Vascular’s business cycles including strategic, organization and talent planning, and annual operating planning; collaborate on new device planning and knowledge sharing across marketing, regulatory, clinical, quality, and operations.
- Support lifecycle management of current and future products from ideation through development to sustaining.
- Drive innovation in all aspects of product development; prepare and deliver presentations to senior management and cross-functional teams.
- Direct and make decisions to resolve systemic problems and improve efficiency and speed of medical device development.
- Apply technical expertise to diagnose design and manufacturing quality problems.
- Coordinate with project managers to assign resources and operate within timelines and budgets; comply with FDA regulations and other regulatory requirements; ensure proper documentation systems are implemented; review and approve project and quality system documentation.
- Ensure technical competency around risk, product safety, reliability, usability, and global regulatory standards and compliance; stay current on developments in the field and travel up to 10%.
What We're Looking For
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Biomedical, Chemical Engineering or related field; or equivalent; Masters in technical or business field preferred.
- Minimum 4 years supervisory/managerial experience; minimum 10 years total engineering experience; strong knowledge of engineering disciplines; experience with medical device design and product lifecycle management over multiple releases, including design and development experience in catheters (preferably balloon catheters) and electro-mechanical systems.
- Deep understanding of global regulatory requirements for medical devices; risk and reliability concepts for development; and the ability to deliver quality products and/or processes.
- A team player who is cooperative, collaborative, and able to build trust and consensus across stakeholders.
- Travel approximately 10%.
Nice to Have
- MBA or other advanced business/technical degree.
- Experience leading cross-functional teams in medical device development.
- Experience with balloon catheters and electro-mechanical systems is a plus.
