Senior Manager, Internal Control

Job Summary

The Senior Manager, Internal Control will lead the design, implementation, monitoring, and continuous improvement of Sunbeth Shipping Limited's internal control framework across all transportation and logistics operations. The role is responsible for providing independent assurance over the effectiveness of operational, financial, compliance, and risk management controls covering road transportation, freight forwarding, air freight operations, fleet management, customs clearing, warehousing, and logistics support functions.

The role holder will proactively identify risks, prevent revenue leakages, strengthen operational efficiency, minimize fraud exposure, ensure regulatory compliance, and provide management with actionable insights that support achievement of business objectives.

Job Details

• 1. Transportation and Fleet Control

• Review end-to-end transport operations from trip initiation to cargo delivery.

• Monitor fleet utilization, vehicle deployment, route adherence, and driver accountability.

• Verify fuel usage, consumption patterns, maintenance costs, and fuel variance reports.

• Conduct periodic reviews of vehicle repairs, spare parts consumption, and maintenance contracts.

• Monitor truck idle time, downtime, and operational efficiency.

• Validate trip revenues against completed haulage activities.

• Review tracking reports from fleet monitoring systems and GPS platforms.

• 2. Freight Forwarding & Customs Clearing Controls

• Review freight forwarding transactions from customer booking to cargo delivery.

• Ensure customs clearing activities comply with approved procedures and regulatory requirements.

• Verify customs duties, terminal charges, shipping line charges, and other statutory payments.

• Monitor clearing timelines to minimize demurrage and storage costs.

• Review shipping documentation for completeness and accuracy.

• Ensure proper approval and documentation of freight forwarding expenses.

• 3. Air Freight Operations Control

• Review air freight bookings and cargo movement processes.

• Monitor airline billing and reconciliation processes.

• Verify cargo documentation and shipment records.

• Ensure proper revenue recognition and billing for air freight services.

• Review service-level compliance with customers and airline partners.

• Identify operational bottlenecks affecting cargo turnaround time.

• 4. Revenue Assurance & Billing Controls

• Review customer quotations, contracts, and pricing approvals.

• Monitor billing accuracy across haulage, freight forwarding, air freight, and ancillary services.

• Verify all completed transactions are billed promptly and completely.

• Investigate unbilled jobs, revenue leakages, and pricing variances.

• Review customer receivables and aging reports.

• Monitor discounts, credit notes, waivers, and write-offs.

• 5. Operational Risk Management

• Conduct risk assessments across transportation, logistics, and freight operations.

• Maintain operational risk registers.

• Identify emerging risks impacting cargo movement and service delivery.

• Recommend risk mitigation actions and monitor implementation.

• Support business continuity planning and crisis management initiatives.

• 6. Regulatory & Compliance Monitoring

• Monitor compliance with:Nigerian Customs Service requirements, FAAN regulations, NCAA requirements, NPA regulations, Nigerian Shippers Council directives, Road transportation and safety requirements, Company policies and SOPs

• Conduct compliance testing and spot checks.

• Escalate regulatory breaches to management.

• 7. Fraud Prevention & Investigations

• Lead investigations into:Fuel theft, Cargo theft, Revenue diversion, Vendor fraud, Payroll irregularities, Procurement manipulation, Driver collusion schemes, Customs documentation irregularities.

• Conduct surprise operational audits.

• Recommend disciplinary and corrective actions.

• 8. Asset Protection & Inventory Controls

• Monitor company vehicles, cargo handling equipment, and logistics assets.

• Conduct periodic asset verification exercises.

• Review warehouse inventory controls and stock movements.

• Ensure accountability for company-owned assets.

• Investigate asset losses and damage incidents.

Requirements

Educational Requirements

• MSc/ MBA in related field, Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.
• ACA, ACCA, or CISA certification is highly preferred.
• Working knowledge of ERP systems (e.g., SAP, SAGE, Tally, Business Central) and Advanced Microsoft Excel.
