The Human Resources Department at St. Catherine University invites applications for a full-time Sr. HR Generalist position.
The Senior HR Generalist is an experienced, trusted HR partner to faculty, staff and leaders across the institution. Working closely with the Employee Relations Manager, the Senior Generalist independently manages a share of the employee relations caseload, including complaints, investigations, corrective action and grievances under two collective bargaining agreements.
The role also supports performance management, job description updates, onboarding, and benefits and leave questions, in partnership with HR colleagues across multiple disciplines. This is an opportunity to help shape an HR team as it builds consistent, fair practices.
Responsibilities include:
- Receive and assess employee concerns and complaints, and route them according to policy and the collective bargaining agreements.
- Independently lead workplace investigations from intake to resolution, including complex and sensitive matters, and recommend outcomes to the Employee Relations Manager.
- Advise managers on corrective action, and supports documentation such as warnings and performance improvement plans.
- Prepare grievance responses, interpret contract language for the two represented employee groups, and advise managers on contract compliance.
- Maintain accurate, confidential case records, analyze trends, and recommend policy or training changes.
- Serve as a trusted advisor to leaders and managers across the institution on complex employee issues.
- Meet regularly with department leaders to identify staffing, performance and retention concerns.
- Conduct exit interviews and stay interviews, and report trends that affect turnover.
- Interpret HR policies and guide managers on consistent application.
- Coordinate the annual performance review cycle across the institution.
- Coach managers on setting expectations, giving feedback and documenting performance.
- Guide managers through performance improvement plans and follow up on progress.
- Work with managers to gather information and draft or update position descriptions.
- Pull and analyze market data from salary surveys, such as CUPA-HR, for new and existing positions.
- Prepare pay recommendations for offers, promotions and reclassifications, including internal equity checks, for review by the VP of Human Resources. Help managers understand pay decisions.

Deliver training to managers and employees on policies, performance management and workplace conduct.

Support new employee orientation and onboarding, and serve as a resource and mentor to HR colleagues.

Lead HR projects and process improvements, such as policy updates and manager training programs.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
-
Bachelor’s degree in human resources, business, psychology or a related field. An equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute.

At least 5 years of progressively responsible HR experience, including at least 3 years handling employee relations matters.

Working knowledge of employment laws, including Title VII, FMLA, ADA, FLSA and Minnesota employment law.

Demonstrated experience leading workplace investigations and documenting findings and corrective action.

Experience handling confidential information with discretion.

Preferred Qualifications
-
HR experience in higher education, including work with faculty and academic leaders.

Experience in a unionized environment, including grievances and contract interpretation.

Formal training in workplace investigations.

SHRM-SCP, SPHR, SHRM-CP, PHR or a comparable HR certification.

Experience coaching managers on performance management.

Compensation
Annual wage is $62,192 – $87,048 depending on qualifications and experience.
The salary range listed reflects a good-faith estimate of what we reasonably anticipate to pay for this position, based on market data and internal equity, at the time of posting. Actual compensation will be determined based on qualifications, experience, skills, and other relevant factors. St. Catherine reserves the right to modify or adjust compensation depending on University needs.
