About the Role
The Senior Facilities Mechanical Engineer provides a full range of advanced physical plant mechanical engineering planning, design/engineering, project management, and operational support to implement The Jackson Laboratory's capital projects portfolio. The role includes technical design and support for sophisticated HVAC, steam, and chilled water plant operations and leads energy-efficiency initiatives across nearly 2M ft2 of complex biomedical research laboratory and vivaria space across five domestic US sites.
What You'll Do
- Designs HVAC, hydronics, steam, chilled water, process gases, and lab/vivaria ventilation and control systems.
- Develops feasibility studies and implements projects for energy efficiency and greenhouse gas reduction.
- Performs system modeling and commissioning oversight.
- Supports vivarium and BSL-1 & 2 laboratory environments with specialized mechanical systems.
- Develops and maintains construction design standards within the mechanical engineering discipline for all Jackson Laboratory locations, ensuring adherence to industry best practices and standards.
- Leads major tenant improvements, relocations, infrastructure upgrades, and new construction from initiation through closeout.
- Develops and manages project budgets, leads bidding, vendor selection, and contract negotiations. Tracks costs, manages forecasts, and identifies cost saving opportunities. Procures, directs, oversees, reviews, and approves the work of external engineering design and planning consultants, providing expert insights and mentorship to the team.
- Acts as primary contact for internal stakeholders and external partners. Provides clear and regular communication on project status, risks, and required decisions, holding vendors accountable for delivery and performance.
- Ensures strict adherence to federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and standards, including IBC, NFPA, and OSHA, during planning and execution.
- Trains and mentors lower-level mechanical engineering staff, ensuring effective growth and development of project teams. Provides specialized support in Facilities Management, offering guidance on maintenance strategies and equipment lifecycle management. Collaborates with Facilities Operations and Maintenance teams to optimize facility performance.
What We're Looking For
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or a related field.
- More than 10 years of experience in mechanical engineering and project management, with a solid understanding of the requirements for critical infrastructure environments.
- Strong interpersonal and written/oral communication skills.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD and/or Revit, MS Office Suite, MS Project, Trimble Construct, or similar software applications.
- Demonstrated organizational, analytical, project management, and time management skills, with the ability to adapt to changing priorities.
- Demonstrated expertise in a wide range of facility equipment and systems, including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, central utility plant, building automation & controls, and other critical infrastructure components.
Nice to Have
- Experience with vivarium facilities and BSL-1/2 laboratories.
- Experience leading large capital projects across multiple sites.
- Experience with energy efficiency and greenhouse gas reduction initiatives.
Compensation & Benefits
- Pay Range: $106,020 - $153,729 USD per year
