Job Description
About us
Fusion, the process that powers the sun and stars, is one of the most promising options for generating the cleaner, carbon-free energy that our world badly needs. UKAEA leads the way in realizing fusion energy, partnering with industry and research organisations to achieve ground-breaking advancements. Our goal is to bring fusion electricity to the grid by developing the power stations of tomorrow and the skilled workforce to deliver them.
About the job
Play a key role in developing the engineering solutions that will support the next generation of fusion energy systems. As a Senior Engineering Analyst, you will apply advanced analysis and design expertise to fusion components and systems, helping to deliver innovative technologies for programmes including STEP and other future fusion devices. This is an opportunity to work on complex technical challenges, influence critical engineering decisions, and contribute directly to the advancement of fusion energy.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Lead the design and analysis of fusion systems and components from concept through to detailed design.
- Perform structural, thermal and multi physics assessments to inform engineering decisions and support system performance.
- Verify and validate designs to ensure compliance with technical requirements, industry standards and legislative obligations.
- Develop and implement approaches for managing design requirements, interfaces and compliance throughout projects.
- Deliver engineering work packages and projects within agreed technical, cost and schedule constraints.
- Produce technical reports, specifications and publications to support project delivery and knowledge sharing.
- Oversee detailed design, manufacture, procurement and contract activities to achieve project objectives.
- Provide technical guidance and oversight to engineers, designers, technicians and contractors.
- Act as a recognised technical authority in specialist areas of engineering analysis and design.
- Improve engineering methods, processes and standards to enhance capability and efficiency.
What You’ll Bring
- Degree in an engineering discipline or equivalent qualification.
- Proven experience in engineering analysis and design, including the application of first-principles calculations.
- Strong knowledge of structural and thermal engineering, solid mechanics, engineering materials and their properties.
- Experience working with engineering design standards and compliance requirements, including pressure vessel standards.
- Experience analysing systems operating in challenging environments, such as vacuum conditions and transient magnetic fields.
- Experience leading technical activities and supervising engineering work within complex projects. UKAEA is an onsite organisation, and this role requires regular onsite presence (usually between 3-5 days in any given week) in line with business needs. We actively support flexible working arrangements where this is compatible with the role.
For this position we are open to considering application for Culham Campus and South Yorkshire.
