About this role

Senior EMC Engineer

In this role, you will have meaningful technical ownership, work hands-on to solve complex EMC challenges, and directly influence product design decisions for current and future connector platforms. The methods, design guidance, and engineering knowledge you develop will help strengthen how Molex designs and validates advanced connector systems.

You will work directly with product development teams from early design evaluation through validation and failure investigation. Rather than simply executing established tests, you will determine whether an issue originates in the product, fixture, calibration approach, contact interface, grounding path, or measurement system. You will communicate EMC risk, identify the design parameters that matter most, and help engineering teams make informed product decisions.

Molex is seeking a Senior EMC Engineer to own the electromagnetic performance and validation of high-voltage and high-speed automotive connector systems. This is a hands-on engineering role for an experienced EMC professional who enjoys working in the laboratory, investigating unexpected results, understanding the physics behind connector performance, and translating technical findings into practical design recommendations.

What You Will Do

  • Own EMC performance and validation for assigned high-voltage and high-speed automotive connector programs, from early design evaluation through validation, root-cause investigation, design refinement, and technical release recommendations.
  • Partner with product engineering teams during design development to identify EMC risks, evaluate proposed concepts, and recommend changes to shielding geometry, interfaces, grounding paths, shield termination, material selection, packaging, and other critical design parameters.
  • Develop and execute EMC and shielding-characterization plans for connectors, cable assemblies, shielding interfaces, and related components.
  • Perform hands-on laboratory testing using Vector Network Analyzers and other relevant EMC/RF measurement equipment.
  • Lead troubleshooting when results are unexpected or inconsistent. Determine whether the source is the product, fixture, calibration, cable, contact interface, grounding path, noise floor, or broader measurement system.
  • Apply electromagnetic fundamentals and controlled experiments to explain why a design is producing a particular result, not simply whether it passed or failed.
  • Evaluate transfer impedance, shielding effectiveness, screening attenuation, coupling attenuation, S-parameters, and related performance measures.
  • Define calibration, reference-plane, fixture, and de-embedding strategies appropriate to the measurement objective.
  • Design controlled experiments to assess the effects of shield termination, seams, apertures, contact interfaces, materials, surface conditions, and geometry.
  • Convert analysis into practical product recommendations and clearly communicate design risk, confidence, trade-offs, and next steps.
  • Evaluate connector designs against applicable customer, industry, and internal EMC requirements, then identify physical design changes that improve compliance margin and product robustness.
  • Develop repeatable test methods, fixtures, work instructions, design guidance, and reusable EMC knowledge for future product programs.
  • Collaborate with simulation, design, laboratory, and global engineering teams on correlation, validation, failure investigation, and continuous improvement. This role is primarily focused on physical measurement and troubleshooting rather than full-time simulation model development.

Who You Are (Basic Qualifications)

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Electromagnetics, RF/Microwave Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Typically 5 or more years of professional experience in EMC/EMI testing, RF or microwave measurement, connector or cable shielding, electromagnetic characterization, or a closely related field. Candidates with fewer years may be considered when they demonstrate equivalent technical depth and independent product ownership.
  • Demonstrated hands-on experience operating a Vector Network Analyzer, performing calibration, interpreting S-parameters or impedance-based measurements, and troubleshooting the complete test setup.
  • Strong understanding of electromagnetic fundamentals, including shielding, coupling, grounding, current-return paths, impedance discontinuities, and interface effects.
  • Experience investigating unexpected results and distinguishing true product behavior from fixture, calibration, cable, interface, or measurement-system effects.
  • Experience developing, adapting, or troubleshooting measurement procedures, fixtures, and test methods rather than only executing fixed instructions.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently identify root causes, run controlled experiments, and convert technical findings into practical product or design recommendations.
  • Ability to communicate technical risk, assumptions, data limitations, and recommendations to product engineers and cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Willingness and ability to work regularly in an on-site engineering laboratory in Rochester Hills, Michigan.

What Will Put You Ahead

  • Automotive EMC experience involving connectors, cable assemblies, high-voltage systems, high-speed interconnects, or shielded products.
  • Experience measuring and interpreting transfer impedance, shielding effectiveness, screening attenuation, coupling attenuation, or comparable shielding metrics.
  • Familiarity with ISO 20076, LV215, IEC 62153, Alternate Line Injection, Line Injection, Tube-in-Tube, triaxial, coaxial, or comparable industry-recognized methods. Exact experience with Molex methods is not required.
  • Experience supporting connector or cable DVP&R, design verification, engineering validation, or failure analysis.
  • Knowledge of measurement uncertainty, repeatability and reproducibility, Gauge R&R, and laboratory-to-laboratory correlation.
  • Familiarity with Ansys HFSS, CST Studio Suite, or similar electromagnetic simulation tools, particularly the ability to interpret models and support test-to-simulation correlation. Advanced simulation-model development is helpful but not required.
  • Experience applying structured problem-solving techniques such as 8D, 5 Why, Fishbone analysis, or controlled DOE.
  • Experience using Python, MATLAB, or similar tools for data processing, test automation, visualization, or statistical analysis.
  • Experience serving as a technical lead, subject-matter expert, or EMC owner for a product or product family.

What Success Looks Like

  • Builds reliable and repeatable shielding measurements by understanding both the electromagnetic physics and the practical test setup.
  • Diagnoses correlation gaps by separating physical design effects from fixture, calibration, contact-interface, and measurement-system effects.
  • Goes beyond pass/fail results to determine what is physically happening, why it is happening, and what should change.
  • Communicates EMC risk and design recommendations clearly enough to support confident product decisions.
  • Learns unfamiliar standards quickly and converts trial activity into controlled procedures and reusable work instructions.
  • Improves the organization's ability to measure, predict, guide, and reuse EMC shielding knowledge across product programs.

Why This Role

  • Own a critical engineering function. Take responsibility for the EMC performance of advanced connector systems rather than serving only as a downstream test resource.
  • Influence real product decisions. Work directly with development teams and provide technical insight that shapes geometry, materials, shield interfaces, grounding, and validation strategy.
  • Solve complex problems hands-on. Spend meaningful time in the laboratory investigating results, testing hypotheses, and determining the physics behind product performance.
  • Build capability that lasts. Develop methods, guidance, and technical knowledge that will be reused across future Molex automotive connector platforms.
  • Challenge and improve established practices. Bring technical evidence, ask difficult questions respectfully, and help strengthen how the organization approaches EMC design and validation.
  • Work across products and disciplines. Collaborate with product engineering, simulation, laboratories, and global technical teams on new technologies and difficult customer challenges.
