Stantec Consulting Services, Inc. (Stantec) is seeking qualified candidates for a Senior Electrical Engineer position to support our Energy & Resources group. Applicants with experience in the hydropower industry are a plus. We are looking for a candidate within commuting range (< 1 hr) of one of three offices: San Diego, Irvine, or Pasadena.

Your Key Responsibilities

The successful applicant will work within a multidisciplinary team of design and engineering professionals to deliver projects for public and private sector clients. Responsibilities will include leading electrical engineering design tasks, supervision of a project team, field work and managing assigned projects, from planning through post-construction.

As the primary intent of this position is to support our hydropower business, you will provide lead electrical engineering support for development of new hydroelectric projects and rehabilitation of existing hydroelectric facilities including: control systems for water control structures such as dams, spillways, intakes and outlets, pipelines, penstocks; generators and excitation systems; generator auxiliary systems; generator buses; generator circuit breakers; unit step-up transformers; high voltage switchyards; balance of plant electrical systems such as medium and low voltage switchgear, motor control centers, DC battery systems, backup generators, etc.; protection and control systems; and grounding and lighting systems.

This role will also include conducting field investigations, liaising with clients, carrying out detailed planning studies, preparing design calculations, authoring technical reports, delivering presentations to stakeholders, leading the development of construction packages (drawings and technical specifications), estimating construction costs, monitoring and supporting construction, participating in commissioning, and contributing to business development activities. You should be capable of working independently with minimal supervision and with a reflective mindset and a willingness to challenge both personal and teamwork.

Below are some of the responsibilities, but not limited to:

Act as an Engineer-of-Record for projects and/or project components.

Leads project coordination meetings with internal team members and/or external consultants, owner and contractor, sub-contractors, and vendors.

Participates in client project requirement meetings, value engineering analysis, and basic cost estimating.

Develops and manages the project scope, budget, staffing and schedule.

Lead the preparation and coordination of the project specifications with construction documents.

Conducts quality assurance and quality control on own projects and projects of peers.

Assists with the development of proposal and other business development activities.

Identify opportunities for innovation, optimization, and standardization in designs while considering constructability and economics.

Proven leadership abilities with strong project engineering experience, including coordination of multidisciplinary teams, project planning, and successful delivery of technical outcomes.

Oversees and manages multiple projects.

Provides guidance, training and mentorship for junior and intermediate engineers and designers.

Oversee the preparation of technical specifications and drawings in multiple software suites (AutoCAD, REVIT, etc.)

Design and review of electromechanical and microprocessor-based relay protection systems for hydro-generation equipment.

Design and review of PLC based control systems for control and monitoring of major industrial equipment and facilities.

Your Capabilities and Credentials

In depth knowledge of standards and codes involved in design and installation of electrical equipment, including US based standards and IEC equivalents. In depth knowledge of US National Electrical Code (NFPA 70) is required, plus familiarity with National Electrical Safety Code (ANSI C2) and arc flash standards.

Experience with hydro facility rehabilitation, controls and protective relay systems, medium and low voltage switchgear, high voltage switchyards, medium and low voltage cabling, and power distribution equipment such as MCCs, Switchboards and Panelboards.

Experience designing interfaces with SCADA/ Control systems.

Experience with Control Schematics and Wiring diagram design.

Experience with AutoCAD required.

Experience with Microsoft Word and Excel required; experience with Microsoft Access is a plus.

Experience with AGI 32, Visual Lighting Software, ETAP, SKM, REVIT (preferred).

Excellent written and verbal communication skills (in English).

Strong organizational skills, multitasking ability, and excellent computer skills. The position also requires excellent verbal and written communication skills, report preparation, and the ability to work with engineering staff at all levels.

Strong willingness to be a part of a large global engineering company, and to work with teams in other offices around the world.

Participates and collaborates in project team setting and to engage in creative and critical thought.

Education and Experience

Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university. Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering preferred.

Professional Engineering license is required. CA PE preferred.

10 years of engineering, design, and construction experience in hydropower.

Ability to manage multiple priorities and timelines.

Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Strong interpersonal skills to effectively work and collaborate with a range of internal and external customers.

Office Location and Schedule

Typical office environment, working with computers and drawings for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to hazards including construction, weather, and industrial operations that may be experienced at the infrastructure facilities.

Stantec offers flexible work environment. While our preference is for the successful candidate to work from the office at least two days per week, we are open to discussing hybrid work arrangements.

Location – San Diego, Irvine, or Pasadena

Willingness to travel to client sites or other Stantec offices (~15% travel).

Pay Range:

• Locations in CO, HI, IL, MD & Various CA, NJ, VA Areas-121,300.00 - 182,100.00 Annually
• Locations in WA, DC & Various CA, MA, VA Areas-130,200.00 - 195,300.00 Annually Pay Transparency: In compliance with pay transparency laws, pay ranges are provided for positions in locations where required. Please note, the final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible. Actual compensation for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on the agreed number of working hours per week.
