What’s the role

Shell is seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer to join its team in Woodcreek, Houston, TX.

The Senior Power Generation Electrical Engineer reports to the Global Engineering Manager and is part of the central multidisciplinary engineering team supporting SRAMI's global asset base. This role has been established to provide technical leadership and subject matter expertise across electrical systems associated with gas-fired generation, renewable energy assets, substations, switchgear, protection and control systems, grid interconnections, and high-voltage infrastructure.

The successful candidate will provide lifecycle engineering support, technical assurance, and reliability leadership for electrical systems across the portfolio. The role will also support acquisition due diligence, project integration, contractor management, compliance assurance, and strategic improvement initiatives. Given the reliance on third-party Operations and Maintenance (O&M) providers, significant experience in contractor management and technical governance is essential.

Shell Renewables Asset Management International (SRAMI) plays a key role in the asset management, operations support, and technical governance of a growing global portfolio of more than 2 GW of power generation assets, including gas-fired generation, onshore wind, solar, battery energy storage systems (BESS), and associated transmission and distribution infrastructure.

Accountabilities:

  • Safety & Asset Integrity
  • Demonstrate visible HSSE leadership through site visits, field engagement, and mentoring of operational personnel
  • Promote compliance with Shell Life Saving Rules and electrical safety management systems
  • Support establishment and assurance of Electrical Safety Rules and Safe Systems of Work across the asset portfolio
  • Provide technical oversight of electrical Safety Critical Elements (SCEs) and associated performance standards
  • Support incident investigations involving electrical equipment failures, electrical safety incidents (including arc-flash), protection system operations, and grid disturbances
  • Drive continuous improvement in electrical integrity management and risk reduction programs

Electrical Asset Management

  • Develop, implement, and continuously improve lifecycle electrical maintenance strategies for: Generators, Power transformers, High-voltage and medium-voltage switchgear, Protection and control systems, Excitation systems, UPS and DC systems, Balance of Plant electrical systems and Grid interconnection infrastructure

Technical Support & Troubleshooting

  • Provide subject matter expertise (SME) to site operations and maintenance teams on electrical equipment performance, reliability, and operational issues
  • Lead troubleshooting activities during forced outages, trips, grid disturbances, and equipment failures
  • Support emergency response and restoration activities for critical electrical events

Reliability & Root Cause Analysis

  • Lead and participate in Root Cause Analyses (RCAs) involving electrical equipment failures
  • Identify recurring reliability issues and develop cost-effective mitigation strategies
  • Apply condition monitoring, diagnostic testing, and equipment health assessments to improve asset performance

Grid Compliance & Power System Performance

  • Support compliance with regional transmission operator (RTO), independent system operator (ISO), NERC, and local grid code requirements
  • Provide technical oversight on:
  • Generator performance testing
  • Reactive power capability
  • Power quality
  • System stability
  • Frequency response
  • Grid interconnection requirements

Protection & Control Systems

  • Review and approve protection philosophies, relay settings, and coordination studies
  • Support cybersecurity and reliability initiatives associated with operational technology (OT) systems
  • Lead technical assurance activities related to protection systems and critical control infrastructure

Management of Change (MoC) & Manage Threats & Opportunities (MTO)

  • Lead and govern electrical system modifications through the Management of Change (MOC) process
  • Ensure engineering standards, technical specifications, and design reviews are performed in accordance with Shell requirements
  • Manage Threats & Opportunities (MTO): Working with Asset Management, Operations Management, OEM’s and O&M providers lead the MTO Standard application across the gas fired & renewables generation portfolio, utilizing the MTO process to create cost-effective action plans to achieve target availability and reliability

Turnarounds & Major Outages

  • Provide technical leadership during generator inspections, transformer outages, switchgear maintenance campaigns, and major plant turnarounds
  • Assure work is delivered safely, on schedule, within budget, and to required quality standards

Asset Acquisition & Integration

  • Support technical due diligence (TDD) activities for acquisitions and new developments
  • Review electrical design packages, studies, risk registers, and commissioning plans
  • Support integration and onboarding of newly acquired generation assets

HSSE

  • Demonstrates strong electrical safety leadership and commitment to Goal Zero
  • Ensures compliance with applicable electrical regulations, standards, and company requirements
  • Supports implementation of electrical integrity programs and assurance frameworks
  • Provides engineering oversight to ensure assets comply with Shell HSSE Performance Framework requirements

What you bring

  • Must have legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or related field
  • Professional Engineering (PE), Chartered Engineer (CEng), or equivalent professional registration preferred
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in power generation, utilities, or industrial electrical systems
  • Demonstrated experience supporting gas-fired generation facilities, combined cycle plants, renewable generation assets, or utility-scale power systems
  • Demonstrated a strong understanding of one or more of the following: power system design and analysis, electrical protection systems, high-voltage equipment, generator and transformer technologies, electrical reliability engineering, and grid interconnection requirements and standards
  • Experience managing OEMs, electrical contractors, and/or maintenance service agreements
  • Significant contract set-up and management experience.
  • Strong project management and stakeholder management skills
  • Ability to communicate complex technical concepts effectively to operational and commercial stakeholders
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally up to 10% of the time

What we offer

The base salary range for this position is $149,000 - $223,000 per year. Individual pay will be based on various factors, such as relevant work experience, education, certifications, skill level, seniority, and internal equity.

For regular full-time or regular part-time employees of the Company (participating companies as listed in the Summary Plan Description), insurance coverage options include medical, dental, vision coverage, life Insurance, Business Travel Accident Insurance, and Occupational Accidental Death Benefit programs. Employees also participate in a company pension plan and a 401(k) plan. Paid leave includes up to 6 weeks of paid vacation time, up to 11 paid holidays, and parental leave offering 16 weeks of paid leave for birthing parents, and 8 weeks of paid leave for non-birthing parents.

Additionally, employees are eligible for short-term disability leave for up to 26 weeks at 100% or 50% of base pay as well as Long-Term Disability insurance. Shell also offers other compensation such financial reimbursement for adoption, wellness, education, and personal learning expenses, and some roles are eligible for discretionary long-term incentives. For interns, eligible benefits include medical, dental, and vision coverage, life insurance, Business Travel Accident Insurance, and Occupational Accidental Death Benefit programs; participation in a 401(k) plan; and paid leave for up to 11 paid holidays.
