About this role

About the Role Senior Electrical Engineer with Black & Veatch will function as a Technical Specialist or Project Lead on substation projects up to 765kV, delivering both protection and control and physical design within an EPC framework. You will guide project teams, coordinate with clients, vendors and other disciplines, and contribute to high-impact electrical infrastructure projects. What You'll Do

  • Function as a Technical Specialist or Project Lead for substation projects up to 765kV in engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC).
  • Develop protection and control design deliverables: protective relays, panel arrangements, one-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, AC/DC schematics, relay panel wiring, and equipment wiring.
  • Develop physical design deliverables including yard layouts, grounding, lightning protection, control building arrangements, and auxiliary AC/DC power systems.
  • Prepare calculations and reports for engineering studies (AC/DC load, grounding, lightning).
  • Perform or oversee quality review of electrical substation design packages.
  • Prepare electrical equipment specifications and Bills of Materials (BOM) for procurement and construction.
  • Communicate and coordinate project activities with clients, vendors, subcontractors and other stakeholders; coordinate design activities with other disciplines.
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to less experienced team members; present proposals, designs and project activities.
  • Travel to client and vendor offices and/or project sites for design reviews, construction coordination, and field verification.
  • Manage and prepare design budgets and schedules; support business development or pursuit activities.
  • Proactively provide guidance on department design guides, standards, systems, applicable engineering codes and B&V quality programs; maintain or develop engineering standards and guides.
  • Actively coordinate with all other internal/external team members on complex projects; establish work plans and project schedules; identify key client interests and drivers and communicate them to the project team. What We're Looking For
  • Experience with electrical substations and EPC project delivery, including design and coordination across multiple disciplines.
  • Ability to lead project teams, communicate effectively with clients and vendors, and mentor junior staff.
  • Strong knowledge of protection and control design, protective relays, and related engineering standards and codes.
  • Proficiency in creating and reviewing engineering deliverables such as one-line diagrams, schematics, wiring diagrams, and BOMs.
  • Willingness and ability to travel to client sites, vendor offices, and project locations.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, budget and schedule management, and ability to deliver complex engineering work. Nice to Have
  • Experience integrating substations with renewables, BESS, HVDC/FACTS/STATCOM, data centers or other advanced infrastructure.
