Job title: Senior Design Engineer (SDE) – OHL
About the Role Senior Design Engineer (SDE) – OHL provides technical leadership and advanced design expertise for Overhead Transmission Line projects, leveraging PLS-CADD and PLS-TOWER. The role blends engineering excellence with strategic oversight to ensure on-time, on-budget delivery to required quality standards.
What You'll Do
- Act as the technical lead on assigned OHL projects, ensuring safe, robust, compliant, and cost-effective solutions.
- Manage the design process: assemble and lead a team, maintain engagement for effective delivery.
- Maintain project controls: change register, Early Warning (EW) register, manage Compensation Events (CEs), and monitor PMIs; collaborate with Design Manager as needed.
- Provide weekly inputs to planners and own the agreed programme.
- Oversee OHL design packages across concept, feasibility, and detailed design.
- Provide technical support to Substations and Underground Cables teams when requested.
- Ensure all deliverables meet industry standards, regulatory requirements, and company best practices.
- Supervise detailed analyses using PLS-TOWER and PLS-CADD; conduct technical reviews of subcontractor OHL deliverables.
- Lead technical peer reviews, quality checks, and design audits; promote continuous improvement and new technologies.
- Provide input for HAZID and HACON meetings; support junior engineers' development through guidance and training.
- Promote Omexom in the industry to attract like-minded talent; participate in professional forums (IET, CIGRÉ, IEEE).
- Occasional travel within the UK (approximately one trip every eight weeks).
- Governance and Stakeholder Interfaces: maintain relationships with Heads of Design, Design Managers, client and supplier representatives, and internal teams.
What We're Looking For
- Degree in Civil/Mechanical/Structural Engineering or related; MSc/MEng advantageous.
- 5+ years of experience in OHL design.
- Chartered Engineer (CEng) status or actively working towards chartership.
- Extensive experience in OHL design elements.
- Advanced proficiency in PLS-CADD and PLS-TOWER; knowledge of AutoCAD and MS Project advantageous.
- Demonstrated ability to lead complex engineering calculations, simulations, and system assessments.
- Proven experience in technical leadership, mentoring and team development.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Membership of professional institutions (IET, CIGRÉ, IEEE) desirable.
Nice to Have
- Experience in multidisciplinary project environments within energy transmission or infrastructure sectors.
- Experience working on National Grid (NG) and Scottish and Southern Energy Networks (SSEN) projects.
- Knowledge of relevant UK standards and regulatory frameworks.
- Ability to challenge and improve existing practices through a proactive, innovation-driven mindset.
