Senior Backend Engineer - AI Orchestration

About the Role Filevine is a Legal AI company delivering Legal Operating Intelligence for the future of legal work. This role focuses on designing and evolving the AI orchestration layer, building durable, fault-tolerant agentic workflows, and delivering end-to-end AI-powered features. You will mentor engineers and collaborate with product, UX, and legal domain experts to translate attorney workflows into reliable capabilities. What You'll Do

• Contribute to the design and evolution of the AI orchestration layer, building durable, fault-tolerant agentic workflows using Temporal activities and ReAct reasoning loops powered by pydantic-ai and Claude.
• Deliver features across their complete lifecycle — from design and prototyping through implementation, pytest/syrupy snapshot testing, GitLab CI/CD deployment via Octopus Deploy, and New Relic APM post-launch monitoring.
• Uphold engineering excellence by conducting thorough code reviews, writing comprehensive tests (unit, integration, Playwright end-to-end), maintaining structlog observability, and upholding uv monorepo workspace standards.
• Mentor mid-level and junior engineers in async Python best practices, pydantic-aiagent design, and clean, testable agentic architecture.
• Collaborate closely with product managers, UX designers, legal domain experts, and frontend engineers to translate complex attorney workflows into reliable, high-impact AI-powered features.
• Actively participate in cross-team planning, design reviews, sprint ceremonies, and AI platform standards discussions.
• Communicate technical trade-offs, agentic design decisions, and reliability impacts clearly to both technical teams and non-technical stakeholders, while contributing to AI orchestration roadmap discussions. What We're Looking For
• 6+ years of professional backend development experience with expert-level mastery of Python (3.12+), async/await, FastAPI, and Pydantic v2.
• Proven production experience building complex, distributed systems — ideally including durable workflow orchestration (Temporal or equivalent), message queues, or event-driven architectures.
• Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to clearly articulate agentic design decisions, reliability trade-offs, and LLM behavior to non-technical stakeholders and cross-functional partners.
• Growth mindset, strong collaborative approach, genuine passion for mentoring others, and proven track record of delivering high-impact features end-to-end in fast-moving production environments.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field preferred — equivalent experience, certifications, or demonstrated expertise with a strong production track record considered equally. Nice to Have
• Experience with Temporal, ReAct reasoning loops, pydantic-ai, and Claude in production environments.
• Familiarity with LOIS or similar Legal Operating Intelligence platforms.
