Job title: SEIU UHW West Organizer / Union Representative
About the Role The SEIU UHW West Organizer/Union Representative will lead the development of a workers’ organization of motivated, empowered and mobilized leaders who act collectively to protect rights, improve work lives, and win better care. This role provides leadership in training and leadership development, new organizing, internal organizing, and political action to advance the Union’s goals.
What You'll Do
- Work with the Executive Board members, shop stewards and committee representatives to design and implement campaigns to build organizational power and ensure effective Union functioning, including recruitment, development and training of members, stewards, and new staff.
- Design and implement organizing campaigns to win Union recognition for unorganized workplaces, build organizing committees, identify issues, and prepare workers for elections and strategic campaigns.
- Lead and motivate to build a steward system that empowers workers through contract negotiation, enforcement, and dispute resolution.
- Assign and guide stewards in developing and implementing Union policies on workplace issues.
- Educate workers on power dynamics and how to use that knowledge.
- Communicate with workers, listen, frame issues, and motivate participation; visit worksites regularly across shifts.
- Listen to workers’ concerns and determine grievance handling and arbitration preparation.
- Organize rallies and demonstrations; provide strike support and community pressure campaigns.
- Develop written materials (newsletters, training materials, literature, press releases).
- Participate in lobbying at State, Federal and local levels and mobilize members around the Union’s political program.
- Lead workers in community issues and build relationships with external partners; recruit rank-and-file for Political Action Committees and campaigns.
- Represent the Union in community and labor coalitions; lead other organizers as assigned.
What We're Looking For
- Experience in union organizing, leadership development, designing campaigns, and worker mobilization.
- Ability to train and lead staff and stewards; strong communication and relationship-building skills.
- Willingness to visit worksites regularly and engage with workers on a variety of shifts.
- Ability to develop written materials and effectively advocate for workers.
- Capacity to collaborate with the Executive Board and participate in political action and electoral campaigns.
