About the Role The SEIU UHW West Organizer/Union Representative will build a workers’ organization in Central Valley and Northern California, training leaders and leading campaigns to protect workers’ rights and improve the quality of work lives. You will provide leadership to train and develop organizers, recruit members, and coordinate political action. What You'll Do
- Design and implement organizing campaigns to win union recognition for unorganized workplaces, build organizing committees, identify issues, and prepare workers for elections and strategic campaigns.
- Lead leadership development, recruit and train stewards, and administer a steward system that supports contract negotiation and enforcement.
- Assign tasks to stewards and guide them in implementing union policies on workplace issues; educate workers on power dynamics and how to use that knowledge.
- Communicate with workers, listen to concerns, frame issues, and mobilize participation; visit worksites regularly across all shifts.
- Organize rallies and demonstrations; provide strike support and coordinate actions, including leveraging community support.
- Develop written materials (newsletters, training materials, press releases) and other communications.
- Participate in lobbying at state, federal and local levels and mobilize members around the union’s political program.
- Build relationships with community groups and coalitions; recruit rank-and-file members to Political Action Committees.
- Represent the Union in community and labor coalition activities and lead other organizers as assigned. What We're Looking For
- Experience organizing workers or unions, with ability to design campaigns, recruit volunteers, train leaders, and drive action.
- Strong leadership, communication, and facilitation skills; ability to motivate and mobilize members.
- Willingness to travel and work across multiple counties; ability to work flexible hours and shifts.
- Understanding of grievance processes, arbitration, and contract enforcement.
- Ability to work collaboratively with the Executive Board, stewards, committees, and external partners; comfort with political action and coalition work.
