About the Role SEIU Local 99 is seeking an Internal Organizer based in Los Angeles, CA. The role focuses on training, coaching and developing members and member-leaders to build power at their worksites and across the union, advancing organizing campaigns and member engagement. What You'll Do
- Effectively recruit, mentor, coach and develop new leaders at worksites and within the union
- Train member-leaders to recruit and mobilize members to participate in the union
- Raise COPE funds by educating members about the connection of politics to wages and working conditions
- Create and foster a member-leader communication infrastructure to support organizing and priorities
- Recruit and mobilize new members; recruit volunteers for electoral and lobbying activities
- Develop and execute plans for internal organizing and campaigns on issues such as member rights, budgets, contracts, health and safety
- Enforce contracts at the worksite or in disciplinary appeals through organizing and advocacy
- Update member case information in appropriate databases; conduct worksite meetings and grievance/labor-management meetings
- Prepare and manage work plans, calendars, files, reports, and other records
- Support and assist in collective bargaining or serve as union chief negotiator when needed
- Campaign outreach (door-to-door, calls, lobbying) for candidates and issues aligned with Local 99
- Participate in rallies and other activities; submit administrative reports and maintain schedules
- Perform other duties as assigned. What We're Looking For
- Knowledge of organizing methodology; strong written and spoken English; proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Excel); familiarity with online meeting platforms (Zoom)
- Ability to organize members to build a power infrastructure at worksites; professional, courteous communication with members, staff, and management
- Sound judgment, prioritization, and ability to work with minimal supervision; maintain confidentiality
- Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to motivate coworkers and work independently or in a team
- Well-organized, self-motivated, and capable of handling high-pressure environments and unpredictable deadlines
- Ability to develop and maintain relationships with senior management, school officials, and elected officials
- Education: Bachelor’s degree preferred but not required; 3 years’ experience as an Organizer in labor or community work
- Requirements include staying flexible with hours (evenings/weekends), and a valid CA driver’s license with appropriate auto insurance; willingness to travel and walk between sites; bilingualism is strongly desired but not required; contract implementation experience is a plus; COVID-19 vaccination is required Nice to Have
