SEIU Local 1021 Field Representative

About the Role SEIU Local 1021 Field Representative based in the Eastbay, CA area supports organizing and representing public service workers. Under the supervision of the Area Director, this role focuses on developing worksite leadership, handling grievances, arbitrations, and disciplinary appeals, recruiting new members, supporting members in exercising political power, and participating in organizing and bargaining campaigns. The position also includes organizing new groups of workers and preparing work plans, calendars, files, and reports. Hours include evenings and weekends; this is not a 9 to 5 role. What You'll Do

• Develop and maintain effective worksite leadership structures through recruitment, training, and support of stewards and other leaders.
• Handle grievances, arbitrations, appeals, hearings, and other personnel matters; assist attorneys and members in preparing for hearings; seek informal resolutions where possible.
• Participate in collective bargaining; serve as chief or backup negotiator; conduct surveys and research to strengthen the bargaining position.
• Recruit and organize new groups of workers and support internal organizing and bargaining campaigns.
• Lead recruitment of members, maintain regular contact with workers, and communicate through visits, flyers, newsletters, phone calls, mailings, and meetings.
• Develop and implement issue campaigns and participate in legislative and electoral activities as appropriate.
• Maintain calendars and records; produce activity reports and maintain documentation.
• Meet travel requirements and work during evenings/weekends as needed. What We're Looking For
• Experience in union organizing and representation; experience in negotiating contracts desirable but not required; experience in county and governmental areas.
• Strong teamwork, oral and written communication, and analytical skills to interpret contract language and process grievances.
• Ability to work under pressure with minimal supervision; highly organized and self-motivated; strong prioritization and judgment.
• Dedication to improving working people’s lives and strengthening organized labor; ability to work with diverse ethnic, social, and economic groups.
• Valid California driver’s license, good driving record, business-use auto insurance, and willingness to travel. Nice to Have
• Additional contracting or government-facing experience; steward and rank-and-file experience is a plus. Compensation & Benefits
• Salary range: $76,054.81 – $124,917.00 per year (USD).
