Job title: Security Officer 1/Dispatcher

About the Role The Security Officer 1/Dispatcher supports the University Police Department by collecting and relaying information, dispatching officers and emergency responders, and maintaining logs to ensure campus safety. This role operates on campus, coordinating with police leadership and campus personnel to respond to incidents and maintain security and order.

What You'll Do

  • Answer the telephone and operate a two-way dispatch radio to obtain/retrieve information and dispatch appropriate officers or other emergency agencies.
  • Interact with faculty, students, staff and visitors in a professional manner, providing customer service, directions, and campus information.
  • Perform receptionist duties for the Department; direct visitors to buildings and rooms; respond in writing to inquiries when necessary.
  • Dispatch University Police Officers and provide relevant information about the nature of incidents.
  • Monitor Police personnel actions to provide back-up support and arrange off-campus emergency personnel when needed.
  • Communicate information to patrol officers and/or police supervisors as needed.
  • Monitor fire alarms and reset the alarm when the emergency ends.
  • Monitor camera systems and door security systems for alarms and observed activity.
  • Monitor the assignment of state vehicles and issue vehicle packets to authorized personnel when using a state vehicle.
  • Disseminate information to appropriate Police personnel via logs, notes, memos, and verbal communication.
  • Log information concerning activity reports and maintain daily log reports for recordkeeping.
  • Direct traffic for University-sponsored events.
  • Maintain student weapons lockers associated paperwork.
  • Assist with lost and found property and associated paperwork.
  • Assist with security and security screening at University events.
  • Maintain knowledge of parking rules and other information, as to provide information when questioned.
  • Use a computer with appropriate software to perform all job functions.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

What We're Looking For

  • Ability to operate a telephone and two-way dispatch radio and to handle emergency communications.
  • Professional, courteous interaction with the campus community (faculty, students and staff) and strong customer service skills.
  • Experience performing receptionist duties and directing visitors, including responding to inquiries.
  • Experience in dispatching officers and coordinating incident response with internal and external agencies.
  • Ability to monitor alarms, cameras and door security systems and coordinate with responders.
  • Strong documentation skills; ability to maintain logs and daily activity records.
  • Knowledge of campus parking rules and regulations.
  • Proficiency with basic computer software and safety-oriented programs.
  • Ability to coordinate with campus personnel and external emergency responders, and assist with maintenance or snow removal calls as needed.
  • Familiarity with conducting or assisting background investigations is noted as part of duties.
