About the Role The Second Shift Autonomous Vehicle Safety Driver will operate autonomous vehicles on public roads in Self-Driving and manual modes to support testing, monitoring, and development of the AVS, and provide feedback to software teams on disengagements via voice recording while driving. This safety-critical role requires maintaining high safety standards and participating in training to safely advance autonomous driving capabilities. What You'll Do
- Safely operate an autonomous vehicle through diverse traffic conditions in both Self-Driving and manual modes.
- Perform tests of software, hardware, interfaces, and instrumentation.
- Continuously evaluate traffic/road/system status and disengage the AVS to drive manually when needed, ensuring safe operation.
- Monitor vehicle movements and provide detailed feedback on performance and disengagements via voice and daily reporting.
- Record disengagements and related situations and review data from the AVS GUI tablet.
- Manage pre/post-mission tasks including startup procedures, vehicle inspections, and daily vehicle cleaning and maintenance.
- Identify potential safety risks and uphold high safety standards.
- Complete rigorous training and participate in ongoing education as VW Group America’s autonomous driving processes evolve.
- Brief and debrief driving behavior to VW Group America's engineers to aid software improvements. What We're Looking For
- 3-5 years of experience operating a vehicle with a clean driving record (no accidents, tickets, or points).
- 2 years of stable employment experience; autonomous vehicle experience preferred; professional driving experience preferred.
- High School Diploma or GED required; Associate or Bachelor's degree preferred.
- Must have a valid driver's license and be able to meet VW's safety driving standards (prototype permit obtained upon hire).
- Ability to pass motor vehicle and criminal background checks and drug screens; additional screenings may be required by third-party partners.
- Local candidates only; must have a valid US passport and a completely clean DMV report; DMV record must be submitted with application.
- Attention to detail and sound judgment for safe public-road testing. Nice to Have
- Autonomous Vehicle experience preferred.
- Associate or Bachelor's degree preferred.
