Job title: School Traffic Guard
About the Role Under direction, the School Traffic Guard regulates and directs the movement of school children at street intersections to ensure their safety. This part-time, 10-month position supports the Atlantic City Police Department in improving school-zone traffic conditions and responding to incidents as needed.
What You'll Do
- Assist and protect children at a street intersection.
- Patrol school zones, study traffic conditions at the assigned intersection, and recommend changes to improve safety.
- Notify proper authorities for police action or medical attention; keep records; prepare reports.
- Respond to public inquiries and complaints; learn and use agency recording systems.
What We're Looking For
- Knowledge of safety precautions for movement and direction of children at intersections; knowledge of conditions requiring police intervention.
- Ability to stay calm and decisive in emergencies; ability to read, write, speak, and understand English; American Sign Language or Braille may be considered acceptable forms of communication.
- Ability to maintain records and use electronic/manual recording systems.
- Driver's license valid in New Jersey only if operation of a vehicle is necessary to perform duties.
- Must be able to stand for approximately 1 hour 25 minutes in the morning and 45 minutes in the afternoon; flexible with schedule; available 12:30-1:15pm for early dismissal, holidays and emergencies; able to work in all weather; 10-month schedule from September to June.
Nice to Have
- American Sign Language or Braille may be considered acceptable forms of communication.
