About the Role
The Respiratory Therapist Intern at University of Michigan provides neonatal, pediatric, and adult respiratory care under supervision, completing training and demonstrating proficiency in respiratory care techniques. The role includes ventilator management, CPAP/BiPAP support, order documentation, and participation in rounds with the care team to coordinate patient care. What You'll Do
- Initiate and perform all phases of neonatal, pediatric, and adult respiratory care.
- Complete training/competencies and demonstrate proficiency in basic and advanced respiratory care techniques, including emergency response procedures, medical gas and aerosol administration, airway management and bronchial hygiene, mechanical ventilation, patient assessment, monitoring and testing, patient transport, infection control, and education for patients, families, visitors or staff.
- Initiate, maintain and wean patients from continuous ventilator support devices, making appropriate ventilator changes based on patient condition, care plans and protocols.
- Initiate and manage CPAP/BiPAP devices as part of patient care.
- Receive and transcribe verbal orders into the patient’s health record.
- Participate in rounds with the primary provider and care team, and department leaders for patients under their responsibility. What We're Looking For
- Enrollment in or completion of an accredited respiratory therapy program; eligibility for professional certification as a Respiratory Therapist.
- Ability to provide neonatal, pediatric and adult respiratory care and to work across multiple patient populations.
- Knowledge of ventilators, CPAP/BiPAP, airway management, infection control, and patient/family education.
- Strong communication skills for documenting verbal orders and participating in rounds; ability to collaborate with physicians, nurses and other care team members.
- Commitment to patient safety, quality care, and adherence to care plans and protocols.
