About the Role

The Respiratory Technician works in the Adult Respiratory Care Department to assess care needs for basic therapies, initiate and perform basic respiratory care techniques and blood gas analysis, and collaborate with respiratory therapists, nurses and other hospital staff to deliver safe patient services.

What You'll Do

• Provide basic respiratory care techniques such as sputum inductions, aerosol and oxygen therapy, and medication administration.

• Perform analysis of arterial/venous blood gases and electrolytes, and calibrate, maintain and troubleshoot blood gas analyzers.

• Set up and test equipment including ventilators, BiPAP, nitric oxide delivery machines and other devices; manage equipment rounds and compressed gas cylinders.

• Assist in intra-tracheal aspiration as needed and provide patient education.

• Re-process and maintain moveable equipment; perform High Level Disinfection (HLD) of bronchoscopes and airway devices.

• Ensure accurate and complete entries in the patient electronic medical record and communicate pertinent observations to oncoming shift; attend shift and staff meetings.

• Follow CLIA/CAP, department and Michigan Medicine policies and procedures; provide equipment support and preventive maintenance.

• Learn new technical devices and clinical procedures when applicable.

• If assigned patient care duties, maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

• What We're Looking For

• Minimum of a high school diploma with some college-level training (e.g., Respiratory Therapy Program student) or another health-related degree; experience providing patient care in a hospital or similar setting.

• Experience in providing patient care services in a hospital or similar healthcare setting.

• Ability to work as part of an inpatient healthcare team and adhere to safety and documentation standards.

• Nice to Have

• Active membership in the American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC) and Michigan Society for Respiratory Care (MSRC) preferred.

• Knowledge of basic respiratory therapy techniques and equipment familiarity preferred.
