Reinsurance Accounting Consultant

We are looking for an experienced Reinsurance Accounting Consultant to support a newly established insurance operation in Indianapolis, Indiana, working remotely. This Long-term Contract position will lead the development of a reliable reinsurance accounting framework, including core procedures, governance practices, and reporting routines. The consultant will work independently while collaborating with cross-functional partners to create an organized, compliant, and scalable accounting function. Essentially standing up the department/processes, etc.

Responsibilities

• Develop and formalize the reinsurance accounting function by creating practical procedures, documentation, and operating standards for a new insurance entity.

• Review reinsurance contracts and determine appropriate accounting treatment to ensure transactions are recorded accurately and in accordance with applicable guidance.

• Prepare and post journal entries, complete account reconciliations, and investigate fluctuations to support accurate financial records and timely analysis.

• Manage key month-end close activities tied to reinsurance balances, including settlements, recoverables, and related general ledger support.

• Produce reinsurance reporting required for financial management and statutory filings, including support for Schedule S and annual statement preparation.

• Design and implement internal controls, review checkpoints, and recurring reporting processes that strengthen compliance and operational consistency.

• Partner with finance, actuarial, treasury, auditors, and external service providers to align data, resolve issues, and support financial reporting needs.

• Assist with establishing accounting workflows and process improvements needed to support an independent operating environment over the long term.

• At least 7 years of accounting experience, including significant hands-on responsibility for reinsurance accounting within an insurance environment.

• Demonstrated knowledge of assumed reinsurance and accounting practices related to life insurance, annuities, or property and casualty insurance.

• Strong background in month-end close, general ledger activity, reconciliations, and financial reporting deliverables.

• Experience creating, stabilizing, or enhancing accounting processes and controls for a new, evolving, or complex organization.

• Familiarity with statutory reporting requirements, including Schedule S and insurance annual statement preparation.

• Ability to interpret complex agreements, apply sound accounting judgment, and translate findings into clear documentation and reporting.

• Prospective success working independently in consulting or interim leadership roles while coordinating effectively with cross-functional stakeholders.

• Experience supporting audits and maintaining well-documented accounting records in regulated financial environments.
