About the Role Cape Fox Facilities Services is seeking an experienced Recruitment and Outreach Specialist to support the OD/Office of Science Management and Operations (OSMO) within the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). This exempt, full-time role supports VRC communications and outreach efforts, including tracking media inquiries, preparing briefing materials, and developing messaging for internal and external audiences.
What You'll Do
- Track and respond to media inquiries, interview requests, press materials, byline articles, and public relations needs to support VRC communications.
- Track and archive VRC information reviewed by subject matter experts and disseminate information to increase effectiveness of written communications.
- Prepare briefing materials and complex scientific summaries on diseases and research areas relevant to VRC activities.
- Support internal and external communications methods (intranet, newsletters, signage, policy, strategic plans, student tours) with clear messaging.
- Help develop an annual editorial calendar and processes for the internal newsletter around VRC initiatives and major events.
- Ensure all public messages and materials are credible, clear, and meaningful for target audiences.
- Develop specialized materials covering highly complex subject matter for varied audiences.
- Advise on and review materials produced by other NIAID division staff.
- Develop scientific and technical materials about VRC programs, activities, and achievements.
- Assist in developing VRC messaging and other products to communicate research successes.
- Create visual and written materials related to NIH, NIAID, and VRC.
- Prepare documents per office policies; review, revise, and edit as needed.
- Ensure responses conform to regulations, style manuals, and publication standards.
- Review documents for logical, well-organized structure; verify information with PubMed, Medline, and other sources.
- Explore new communications methods to improve efficiency and tailor messages to audiences and distribution methods.
- Travel up to 0-10%.
What We're Looking For
- Master’s or Ph.D. in a related science field.
- Minimum of one year of experience in a related scientific field.
- Demonstrated strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills.
- Experience in writing scientific manuscripts and reviews.
- Ability to communicate basic scientific ideas to the general public.
- Experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Teams, etc.).
Compensation & Benefits
- Hourly pay: $45.59 for up to 40 hours/week.
