Role Overview

As a QA Engineer you will work in a collaborative fashion within our Software Engineering teams and will report to a QA/Test Lead. You will take ownership of validating new features, firmware and integrations across our software and hardware products, ensuring releases are reliable, compatible and customer-ready.

Manual exploratory and functional testing form a core element of this role, however we are also excited to speak with candidates who have practical experience with test automation and are keen to apply that knowledge to actively reduce our manual testing. You will proactively explore ways to automate repetitive manual test cases, streamline regression cycles and improve testing efficiency across software and hardware boundaries.

The most important part is that you are a hands-on QA Engineer who enjoys problem-solving, cares deeply about product quality, and is proactive about introducing automation and modern testing practices into sprint-based Agile teams!

Please note, to apply for this position you must be based in the UK and have the legal right to work in the UK. This role is largely remote but would require visits to our Oxfordshire or Cheltenham offices on a monthly basis for team meet-ups/key meetings.

What we're looking for

A passionate QA engineer, with an interest in software and hardware products. You may have previously worked on hardware products, this is not an essential skill but we would really appreciate candidates with an interest in both software and hardware products.

The following are highly desirable, but we do not expect you to have them all:

Experience in the design and execution of manual tests for software systems, with proven hands-on experience in test automation and a desire to reduce repetitive manual testing through automation.

You have excellent skills in script-based automation (e.g., Typescript/Javascript) to automate API, service or regression test cases.

A strong level of proficiency with Linux environments, including navigating the command line and exploring application/system logs for debugging and root cause analysis.

Experience with modern defect and test management workflows (Jira or Git) and test management tools such as Qase or TestRail.

A great understanding of Agile delivery, with experience working within sprint-based squads.

Practical experience with defect management, regression testing and test documentation.

You have a strong interest in testing software which interacts with hardware platforms, peripherals or connected services.

Excellent analytical and troubleshooting skills, including customer issue diagnosis and root cause analysis.

You enjoy working cross-functionally and have collaborated closely with developers, product and delivery teams.

A strong focus on continuous improvement, you are comfortable taking ownership of a testing domain and driving improvements.

Nice to Have Skills

Exposure to the testing of Telephony/VoIP systems, SIP protocols or a familiarity with Asterisk.

A strong interest in exploring AI-led testing tools and AI-assisted workflows to improve test design, data generation and overall testing efficiency.

Experience with audio software, hardware or electronics testing.

An ISTQB / ISEB Foundation certification or equivalent.

A level of familiarity with API testing tools such as Postman.

What you'll do

  • Design and execute manual tests for software, firmware and hardware peripherals.

  • Proactively identify opportunities to automate manual test cases and implement automated checks to reduce repetitive testing effort.

  • Examine Linux system logs and service telemetry to diagnose defects, isolate issues and conduct root cause analysis.

  • Test and validate both internally developed and third-party software packages.

  • Perform compatibility testing across product variants and configurations.

  • Carry out regression testing, failure analysis and root cause investigation.

  • Accurately record and manage defects using Qase and Jira.

  • Collaborate daily with internal and external development teams, building strong and trusted relationships, built on trust and empathy.

  • Explore, trial and propose modern testing techniques and tools, including AI-assisted tools where beneficial, to enhance testing speed and quality.

  • Identify and implement process improvements across the testing lifecycle, sharing knowledge and ideas with your colleagues to constantly raise the bar.

  • Act as a subject matter expert within your area of responsibility and contribute to a team environment where we share knowledge and empower one another.

  • Support with field testing activities with UK customers when required.

  • Participate in QA guild meetings and contribute to discipline-wide alignment.

  • Advocate for and champion QA best practices, testability and quality-first thinking.

  • What Does Success Look Like?

  • First 3–6 months

  • You've delivered accurate test estimates that align with delivery plans.

  • Testing activity has supported release schedules without becoming a bottleneck.

  • You've developed a confident working knowledge of our architecture, Linux environments and core testing workflows.

  • Issues and risks are communicated early, clearly and constructively.

  • You've built strong working relationships across Engineering and QA, and are thriving in your team.

  • You've demonstrated ownership of a defined testing domain.

  • You've successfully audited manual testing within your domain and have begun implementing automation for repetitive tests.

  • 6 months +

  • You consistently identify defects before customer exposure and have contributed to a measurable reduction in customer-reported issues.

  • You are recognised as a trusted subject matter expert within your domain.

  • You've reduced manual regression overhead by transitioning routine manual checks into stable, automated tests.

  • You've actively improved testing efficiency, test coverage and QA processes through modern tooling and automation.

  • You have played a key role in maintaining VoCoVo’s quality standards as we scale.
