Job title: Python Engineering Manager
About the Role Canonical is hiring a Python Engineering Manager who is accountable for the development of an internal product, maintains high engineering quality standards, and continuously develops their own skills as well as those of their direct reports. This role sits in Canonical's Commercial Systems unit, which comprises six engineering teams that collaborate with other engineering and business teams to support Canonical's growth. The position offers the opportunity to work with open-source solutions and to contribute to innovative engineering solutions in a predominantly home-based, EMEA-focused environment.
What You'll Do
- Lead and manage Python engineering teams within the Commercial Systems unit to deliver internal products and initiatives.
- Drive engineering quality, testing, CI/CD, and best practices; own delivery against roadmap.
- Mentor and develop the skills of direct reports and team members, fostering growth and career progression.
- Collaborate with cross-functional engineering and business teams to align strategy and execution.
- Contribute to architecture and design decisions; participate in hands-on development as needed.
- Promote open-source solutions and Canonical's growth in alignment with business goals.
What We're Looking For
- Proven experience as an engineering leader/managing Python-based software projects.
- Strong commitment to engineering excellence, quality standards, testing, and scalable software.
- Track record of developing engineers; ability to coach direct reports and build high-performing teams.
- Excellent collaboration and communication skills; comfortable working with distributed/global teams.
- Familiarity with open-source software and Canonical's ecosystem is a plus.
- Ability to work in a remote/EMEA-focused environment and align with multiple time zones.
Nice to Have
- Experience contributing to and/or supporting open-source projects.
- Knowledge of Ubuntu/Canonical products and the cloud, data science, AI, or IoT domains is advantageous.
- Previous work in distributed teams across multiple countries.
