Job title: Protection and Control Engineer

About the Role Provides engineering support to Area Substation Supervisors and Field personnel. Performs protection and control investigations, assists with testing and calibration of relay protection devices, design engineering, and restoration activities. Applies engineering principles to mitigate mis-operations, reliability analyses, and root cause failure analysis. Prior experience with Transmission Protection Systems, NERC PRC-005 regulations, or RTU/SCADA systems is preferred.

What You'll Do

  • Perform a wide variety of detailed engineering analysis in substation protection/control areas, including design, outage investigations, mitigation plans, documenting outage causes, identifying customer interruption trends, auditing asset maintenance, and solving problems using engineering principles to develop cost-effective, technically sound solutions.
  • Apply knowledge of engineering principles to evaluate alternatives, make decisions, and interpret applicable electrical codes, procedures, standards, processes, and policies.
  • Provide engineering and technical support to Area Substation Supervisors for diagnostic and preventive maintenance tasks and ensure compliance with industry standards (e.g., NERC, SERC) and other utility regulations.
  • Collaborate with other disciplines within Transmission and other company units to achieve goals.
  • Assist with storm/emergency restoration efforts as necessary.

What We're Looking For

  • Minimum education: Bachelor's Degree in Engineering (Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, Chemical, or Industrial) from a four-year accredited institution; degrees in engineering technology with PE may be considered. Desired: Electrical Engineering Degree.
  • Experience levels: Engineer II - 2+ years; Engineer III - 4+ years; Engineer Sr - 6+ years in an engineering discipline.
  • Desired: Protection and Control experience with troubleshooting, data analysis, causal determination, and equipment testing.
  • Knowledge, skills and abilities: Technical mastery of engineering principles; in-depth knowledge of procedures, programs, and standards; strong value-driven engineering judgment; ability to mentor others; leadership and interpersonal skills; strong written and oral communication; strong math skills; PC/software proficiency; ability to manage multiple activities and changing priorities; ability to work under pressure; safety-focused; hazard recognition and mitigation; commitment to diversity and inclusion; ability to identify process improvements and drive change.
  • Travel: 25% to 50%. Relocation option: Level II.

Nice to Have

  • Protection and Control experience with trouble-shooting, data analysis, causal determination, and equipment testing (as noted above).
